Hi All
Found this 2011-D in change from McDonald's last Sunday. It looks clearly like a double or even triple date and mintmark. I looked at "Coppercoins" and there are no 2011-D varieties listed as yet. This may be a new one. Other outer devices may also have some doubling. It's a really nice looking coin but still having some trouble with my USB microscope picture taking. What do you all think.
Pete

Thanks for sharing, hopefully you went for the McSalad!

Looks like MD to me, although I'm not familiar with double dies on modern coinage. They made several adjustments to safeguard against the old school double dies, but I don't know what those were or how it was done.

Thanks drsandman2 and John.

If it is Machine Doubling as the good dr suggests, I am now confused on what the difference is between MD and real doubling except in extreme cases, like a 1955 or 58 for example. To me this coins date and mintmark shows the notches that help identify actual doubling. John are you not sure? Anyone else with an opinion.

I see what I think you are seeing. On the ones for example, the sides look kinda flat and shelf like but the bottoms look rounded and shifted so.....Let's wait for a pro to chime in.

Thanks for the 2nd response John.

Perhaps you can answer this one. I recall seeing somewhere that sometime in the late 80's or early 90's that the date and mintmark were no longer punched separately, but that they are part of the entire obverse. I looked at coppercoins again and sometime in the early 90's and since then, I no longer see any MM varieties. The date and mintmark do show up occasionally as one of the pictures of a variety although not the primary feature, and occasionally noted with doubling or extra thickness. The primary feature is shown either as a DO or DR. I think this coin and a 2011 P that I have do show DO on liberty and other outer devices. I just have to be able to get better pictures. A work in progress. Hope the experts do weigh in on this.

Thanks again, Pete41

I do see what may be notching on one 1 and the 2....but the graininess of your pics makes it tough to say anything for sure...it may be contact marks.

No RPM's after 1989...they started including the MM on the master die in 1990 so doubled dies can show doubling on the MM.

In your third photo if you look at the bottom of the ones you could get confused but the answer is at the top of the ones. If it were hub doubling the secondary image would not go all the way top the top but would end short of it by as much as the spacing at the bottom.

Thanks Maineman750 for the explanation on the master die and Dr Don. I don't think the tops are level, but the pictures are not good enough to show that for sure. Anyway, any ideas on how to take good pictures of coins, and with what.

After reading the explanations I agree with MD. Still a keeper though just label it accordingly.
