I bought the proof set that had the silver penny in it and as a result get mailings from the Canadian Mint.

Noticed the 2012 mint set was the last to have the penny and it mentioned the "rare" fifty cent piece.

not familiar with Canadian coinage, but I bought 4 on impulse, is the half dollar "rare" or not, if so why?

Also how is that proof set with the silver penny doing on the secondary market? Thanks, bob

First we have to define rare!

According to the Miriam-Webster dictionary....

Definition of RARE
1: marked by wide separation of component particles : thin <rare air>
2a : marked by unusual quality, merit, or appeal : distinctive b : superlative or extreme of its kind
3: seldom occurring or found : uncommon

Since the 50 cent coin is not circulated, then I guess that it would be (3)seldom found. Harder to find than most other coins, but still a part of any proof or specimen set that the mint produces. Just a sales tactic if you ask me.

I have an uncirculated set.
The fifty cent from last year is even rarer than the ones this year!
I bought the set because it contains the old style loonie and toonie. The cent would also have a low mintage and the fifty cent piece is pretty. It is not for circulation; therefore, I don't think that the number of this coin will drop. (circulation coins get worn and eventually melted.)

There should be no more set with one cent produced in Canada. If they do make one, and only one, that would be a rare set. The 50 cents continue coming out even though they are out of circulation, which means that the Mint stating "Rare" is only explained by business and profit purposes.

I don't know about the fifty cent coin but the set itself was doing pretty good on ebay last time I checked.
Personalty I think you did well, there are a lot of firsts with that set as well as this being the last year for the penny (and there is a unique penny in that set).
I wish I had got 4 as well.
