I once read a newspaper story about a guy who broke into what he thought was an unoccupied house to steal whatever he could. He got into a room with the home owner's pet Rotty. The cops said that he left bloody fingerprints in the area where his fingernails ripped away the edges of a door as he made his escape. He was found later at the local hospital, suffering from multiple animal bite injuries and weak from the loss of blood. Seems to me that he got punished pretty badly.
