Can someone explain why toned or dark coins seem to grade higher than a coin with luster and eye appeal.I am trying to sharpen my grading skills but at times I get confused at grading companys. One example is a 1906 25 cent coin and we do not have to discuss the grading company because it might cause hard feelings for some people.I will post a scan and you tell me what you think please.I was thinking ms 60 only.

I can understand your confusion, In my opinion the second coin has more detail and is a higher grade of coin

These are two coins I have on my watch list but not high on my priority list. What I di is place them in with my other scaned for a peek later. They are both graded ms 64 but by different grading companys. The first one is ICCS graded the dark one and the second is PCGS.

the first coin may not be that dark in hand....could just be the way the photo was taken. To me the second does look like it has better detail. You could always ask the seller if they have other photos

I strongly disagree.

ICCS grades much stricter when the coin is dark.

When grading medium to dark toned coins it can be difficult for a lot of graders, pro or novice , to miss marks that the toning tends to hide. On bright fully white or nearly so numismatic treasures it is much easier to pick these up. An old "fox" in the business once told me that you can make a lot of money by acquiring the ability to "see through toning". He certainly was right. That is why some collectors given the choice of a blast white coin with a few marks will often choose that over a dark toned piece with few or none. Like they say beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.
