So, this is my first time posting a new topic on here! Here is the story. I was at an auction 2 weeks ago with my father, which we go to often. Lots of general stuff, some coins, but I don't go for the coins, they generally go for MUCH more than their honest value. Usually higher prices than ebay! Anyway, they have a big table full of boxes of stuff, and my dad found a box with many small items, seemed to be from the 1960's. Little cars, medicine bottles, a couple pocket knives, this kind of thing. He tells me that there is a 1 ounce silver coin in the box. I go look at it, and it is this 2001 Silver Panda! I am very excited, and tell him the Panda's generally are worth more than spot price, however they are very often faked as well. He is not into coins or silver, but is into the other stuff that is in this box, so I told him I would buy the coin from him for $25 if he wins the box. So, late in the night, the box finally comes up and sure enough he buys it for $40. I ask if he will take $25 for it, and he says yes, so we are both happy. I am hopeful that this coin is real, if it is, this is a great deal. I hope some of you can help tell me if it is real. It is in a hard plastic holder, inside a soft plastic sheet. There appears to be some mild toning around the very edge of the front of the coin, and I see that the edge of the soft plastic was cut too close and is not airtight. Does this look like real packaging from the mint? Should I take the coin out and weight it, or will that diminish its value? Is there a sure way to tell, other than sending it off to a grading company? Thanks all for your help!

i have a fake gold panda from the same year, cost $3, but the detail on yours looks so much better I would hazard a guess at it being real

No clue what Chinese mint packaging looks like, but weighing only helps but does provide more information to get to the answer of whether its real or not. If you take it out of all the plastic you can also run a magnet over it. Silver wont stick to a magnet so if it doesn't stick you should be confident that at the very least you got a largely silver coin. Obviously a grading company would be the easiest way to tell and it may in fact be worth giving that a shot if you have other coins you were going to send in considering the great deal you got if its real. For what its worth on ebay the 69s were selling for over 100 dollars and the 68s even got close to 100. With what you paid and current ebay completed sales if you got a 67 youd break about even if you wanted to sell and a 68 or higher and you would have made some money/increased its value

The reverse is kinda making me nervous. Some details match a known fake. The middle part of the steps. Heres a pic of a real and fake. Fake on left.

I am leaning towards it may be a fake as jokingjoker pointed out in the pictures.
Do a weight test.

I always look at middle stairs. At least from the pic I would pass.

i thought I read in here that the reverse pic was the best one to use for judging fake panda's?

Couple of things to check, Silver Panda dated 2001 and earlier have reed edge like ||||||||
2002 and above have reed edge that look like \\\\\Also you didn't provide the entire picture of the package, as there are special mint marking.
Last, if possible show a better image of the reverse with more detail.
Edit: But I am thinking is almost looks good!

How is everyone judging from the picture, when those two aren't even the matching year. I'd probably compare it to some coins with same year and weight from google, but to be 100%, you gotta take it out and weight it, but sometimes people like having their coins in original wrapper, so it's also not a good idea to open the packaging. When in doubt, take it to a coin dealer and see what they say.

Heres NGCs site with pictures of an 01 http://www.ngccoin.com/news/viewart...ArticleID=67Quote: When in doubt, take it to a coin dealer and see what they say. A dealer doesn't know anything more than anyone else just because theyre a dealer. Some do know more, but being a dealer just means you deal in coins, not that youre an expert. Most US dealers wont deal in Pandas anyway

http://www.pandacollector.com/rogue.htmlhere is one good web site on pandas in general and fakes in particular ... after reading it I only buy slabbed pandas or from the sellers in germany (there seems much less fakes) considering my inexperienced eye I'd say you've bought fake panda ... the reason is too much detail on roof. If you want more info search for panda forums

Are you sure you don't have that backwards? If I am reading the info correctly on the NGC site that basebal21 linked to, the fakes are the one with the extra details on the steps, which would make corey9493's coin likely to be genuine.

Yeah saw that, but the way I read it on the panda collector website it was the way I posted. So no telling.
