First picture: (rev.) a prow of a galley, proceeding right.
second picture: (obv.) head facing left, probably bearded.

The gold coloring seems to be plating?, which has flaked off in parts, but it may be an orichalcum (brass) core. Can't make up my mind about that. The darker patches seem to have some greeny blue in them, suggests copper or copper alloy.

If it was gold, it would not exhibit surface degradation, such as shown.

What is the diameter and thickness?

Is the green stuff sitting on top, or is it down in the bottom of pits? Gold doesn;t corrode, so unless it's sitting on top, it's not gold.

As for the design, I think I can see a ship's prow and "ROMA" above it. That would make it a Roman bronze coin - or the remnants of one, anyway. Compare with pics here.

I don't think that is corrosion. It looks like it maybe gold. Take it to a jeweler to be tested, then DO NOT sell it to him bring it here and some of us would offer you far more money for it, if its real.

This thread should be moved or posted at "Identification: Unidentified Coins, Medals, and Tokens", not PMS and Bullions.

And in my opinion, it's a copper based coin, since it looks like the Green Monster is eating it away. Don't think it's a Zincoln due to the first picture, which kinda has a frame of something on the lower half. Could be a thick coin rim, maybe the bottom of a cut off shoulder of a person's face, or part of some design of that coin/token.

By measuring the coin diameter and thickness, the volume of metal could be determined. Knowing that and the weight, a density could be calculated. Gold is heavy stuff, so should be around 19.3 grams / cc. Copper is just under 1/2 of that and brass is a little lighter still.

looks like an old button - but I fear its no gold...
i see a bit "grünspan" (thats the german word for the green coloured parts and is because of the copper contented in the object.

The more I look at it the more I do indeed think it is just a brass covered button smashed flat. That big crater near the center of the second image is where the loop to sew it on the garment likely was. 18th and 19th century buttons had off center loops for the thread to pass through and the outer fancy part was just clamped over a solid metal core. Over time when the outer brass casing got smashed flat corrosion "welded" the inner core to the outer shell thereby it not falling off. Is just a guess....but it seems to fit the look of some metal detector finds of mine.

Sap: TY for the info....
I totally see the "ROMA" at the top left of the coin &
found the closest coin on that link being "Ref Syd 86 Uncia"-"217-215 BC. Helmeted head of Roma left"
because he is looking left, as most are faced to the right.
It's pretty well the exact coin!
