Hey guys, I purchased a World Coin Book complete with 120 world coins from 120 countries, I really like it and there's a plethora of UNC coins in there. The seller gave me two gifts, one is the US 1776-1976 S Mint Silver Set, I thought what I received was too good to be true so I took them all out and weighed em, they all weighed +0.5gram more than the usual. On the other hand, the Ike dollar weighed 1gram less . Therefore, I proceeded to stealing my moms knife sharpener and scratched it with my own genuine 40% Silver coin (revealed a white scratch mark) whereas the fake Chinese made one made a yellow/brown scratch mark. Please note that these coins have very attractive white edges but it turned that they were just only plated with a yellowish material hidden below. I smelled them too, and it immediately connected me with the fake Sunshine Minting Bars that I posted here earlier. Anyways, be careful guys.... Luckily, the Coin Folder featuring Lincoln and Kennedy had a 90% Half Dollar in that turned out to be genuine according to my tests so good thing I still scored with this purchase :) Edited by silverdollar2011 10/01/2012 8:43 pm

Can you show us pics of the fake coin up close? You seem to have the worst luck with fake coins...I feel bad for you...seems a week doesn't go by where someone doesn't stick you with a fake.

That is really bad. I don't check the silver when I buy it. I tend to rely on the seller's honesty. But I think I should do a random check of my stash just to be sure.

Silver getting expensive daily, and counterfeiters will do anything to rip people off. How good are these strikes comparing the real coins?

As requested, here are some beautiful photos (I just got a new Sony Camera FX9), wow I was amazed at how good they turned out. When I encounter 40% halve dollars, their edge are usually "depressingly greyish" in color, now this is a really bad mocking of it. Also, the Ike dollar appears to be near fully white which is not right because it's supposed to be greyish like the 40% half dollar... As for checking out your collection, just do a sound test. I'm very confident that all of you have already played around with your silver coins and have familiarize yourself with the sounds. If that does not work, proceed to smelling them. I would say it works for coins of purities 90%+. Silver smells sweet like distilled water, it is clean and fresh. Now, the bicentennial set that I have in this case smells very acidic and strong. The last fake sunshines I had, the smell was entirely strong and had been stuck up in my mind LOL. For 1000oz bars, please cut that thing up or send it to NGC for analysis, now those seem very fishy to me. You guys have salaries and so do I but a negative salary LOL (college debt), and I'm bringing this up because I don't want masterminds, especially the Chinese under the shrouds of darkness who produce fake silver to sell it to you guys. Please be more careful when buying silver especially starting NOW because this is starting to break loose. Sorry for the long post.

Question - please confirm: The Ike dollar weighed 1 gram less than it's nominal weight of 24.6 grams?

Sorry, that was an error on behalf of my scale failing to tare 0, it weighs 0.28g less at 24.42g but that's still pretty significant much?

Was this a ebay purchase? I have seen similar album with coins in them from your first picture. Are these sellers from China also? They are doing a good job so far counterfeiting modern days coinage.

@macmercury, no, the seller is from the US and he decided to give the 40% set and a Lincoln/Kennedy 4 Coin Set (contained a genuine 1964 90%ner) as a free gift. In total, I spent over $20 so I'm not upset but rather was surprised at how even 40%ners would be copied. For example, would you be shocked if suddenly there are 35% Silver War Nickels started circulating? Therefore, in purchasing silver especially in large amounts it would be wise to sample a source first before buying in bulk. In addition, the rims of the fake coins are quite sharp, moving my finger from the center of the obverse/reverse to the rim would definitely easily trim some cells off lol. Please keep in mind that fake silver will look and feel much more sharper than the ones that are genuine.

Quote:For example, would you be shocked if suddenly there are 35% Silver War Nickels started circulating? Honestly I wouldnt. Literally everything is faked now that you can make money off of. The smarter copiers stick to common things that dont get noticed as easily or draw the attention as opposed to go for the big score. How long do you think someone could get away with pumping out 1 dollar bills if they could? Whens the last time youve ever seen someone check a $1? On the bright side you wont have to worry about fake common date pennies any time soon

Can a Ike expert tell me just by looking at the Ike, does it give you any red flags? Most chinese counterfeits aren't that detailed, etc....

why would anyone fake 40% silver for profit taking? aren't there better ways to make money counterfeiting money?! Does it worth to make such a cheap fake with such a quality? With such good fakes I think they would be better off by faking old us commemoratives ... using silver ... and getting much more on numismatic value ...
this is one heck of a good fake I'd say, if it is ...
for me Ike looks good ... but I held only few Ikes in my hand and not an expert at all ...
Tell us what brand of the scales are you using? For some scales .24gr is not that much.
