There are suble changes with each year, number of posts, steps, doors, the temple roof, reeding and the font.

1. Steps don't look right. (But it could be the photo). -
2. There are the correct number of posts on the bottom left part of the fence. +
3. Door is correct for the year. +
4. Point of temple looks correct. +
5. Font in year maybe sketchy. There is a nub instead of a point in the "2" (+), but I can't see the "1" very well and it looks like the top is slanted (-).

I can't see the eyes enough to tell for the photo.

Mint packaging means nothing with these. I've seen whole pages of mint packaged Pandas that were fake.

Have you tried the magnet test? You don't even need to take it out of the packaging, just run a big magnet over it.

If you have another Panda the fake Pandas are usually thicker (so they weigh the same as a silver Panda), or are under weight (because they are the same size of a silver Panda).

At the moment I was to say tentatively that it looks good to me. Better photos would help.

The steps/door scream fake to me...this is from comparing a 2009 and 2012 in hand. The "fake vs. real" photo has it correct. Unless the door detail is different on a 2001 than a 2009 or 2012 I have to say this coin is definitely fake. That "edge toning" you are referring to is likely where the brass core is exposed near the edge of the coin and it is corroding. Is this toning green or yellowish? Fake Pandas are notorious for edge coloring where the plating is thin on the edge and the interior metal can be exposed to air.

P.s. just checked out NGCs pics and they have it absolutely BACKWARDS in regards to the reverse! Someone needs to notify them asap! They are doing a huge disservice to anyone using their site as a reference!

unholyroller: The reverse of the 2001 is different than the reverses of the 2009 and 2012.

Are you sure about the NGC pics?

Well...someone of authority is! Pandacollector site has it reversed. Just assumed since it was their area of expertise they would have it right. I am new to Pandas and just have the more recent issues, but I do find it very interesting ( confusing ) that the more recent issues are using the reverse of older counterfeits! Seems what was a counterfeit for early issues is correct on more recent issues and vice versa! Wow are these pandas evil on determining authenticity!

P.s. my bad on trusting pandacollector site....they give off the assumption that 2001 and 2002 temple sides ( I keep thinking the temple is the reverse when it is actually the obverse ) are the same. When in fact 2002 is a transition year. Upon a LOT of research on my part to save face.....from what I can tell in your pics your coin is genuine! Last time I will ever trust just ONE site again...especially one that tries to be the expert!

your coin is genuine.don't take it out of mint packaging if you don't have in mind to slab it.the coin looks right and have no red flag.the packing is a double sealed by official mint and coins in these tend to sold for more.

I agree with epop to the point, it just that I want to see the stairs/steps that's not showing on the reverse, plus the entire packaging.

The fake has a raised font it looks like anyway and the real one appears to have a engraved font....

The coin you have is engraved so I think its real....

It also has rim toning forming on obverse, and I doubt that would happen if it was NOT made of real silver....

I have a copy of the Gold and Silver Panda Coin Buyer's Guide by Peter Anthony and published by Pandacollector Press. Base on your photos I would say that you have a genuine 2001 Silver Panda. If it does indeed turn out to be a fake, it is one of the best I have ever seen. My wife, who seems to be able to spot fake Pandas quite easily also says it looks like the real thing.

Should I take the coin out and weight it, or will that diminish its value? Is there a sure way to tell, other than sending it off to a grading company?

I take all mine out and put them in ringed AirTites.

Thank you all so much for your thoughtful, and well researched ideas! I looked at the photos (thanks for the links!) and I too now think this is real (of course, I am a bit biased). I will try the magnet test with it still in packaging, and if that comes up good then I think I will leave it in the mint packaging. I don't need to sell it or anything, so it's fine to stay in my stash. Down the road I might try to trade it and a few dollars for a graded example, but this is my first panda so I'm not sure if I want to start collecting them yet or not...sure is pretty though!

Thank you all again!
