i thought the idea of slabbing coins was to guarantee the grade, and protect the coin from future damage? I tend to think even touching the edge of the coin will eventually cause black marks, I'm sure I have read that in here as well. no more slabs for this little duck unless they are as cheap as non slabbed coins from now on, no point in paying extra for them to handle the coin that I do my best to never touch.

I have literally never once handled a coin with gloves on, nor will I ever. Latex gloves which are thick-enough to guarantee not tearing at the slightest provocation would indeed reduce my tactile sense below the level I'm comfortable with, while being more likely to pick stuff up from the environment than my fingers would. Admittedly, my hands do not sweat at all - were that different, my opinion might change. At a TPG, I'd concede to chance and keep a rosin bag handy just in case, understand there'd also be a handy towel to wipe off any remaining powder before I actually touched a coin.

Good thread. I was curious how TPG would manipulate a coin without causing damage to it. I wonder why TPG don't offer "at-the-mint grading/slab" services? Then your coin would have minimal amount of handling/shipping/exposure.

Wow, their computer systems and monitors are ancient.

Quote: I wonder why TPG don't offer "at-the-mint grading/slab" services? Cost, they would have to set up at every mint and then youd have a different group grading at each mint and the home office. Plus the mint wouldnt allow it. Itd slow them down and increase their costs too

Don't forget that the video is quite old.

@erckle The graders don't hold the coin long enough for them to do any damage, and their hands would be clean enough as to prevent your 'black marks'. Hope you will reconsider banning certified coins from your purchase list. (then again, it always means more for me )

i already have a slabbed coin with a finger print on it, I presumed it was not visible when graded and slabbed. and take all the slabs you like, I could save you some money and just handle my coins and sell them to ya a bit cheaper without the slab add 35% for untouched coins. ;)

The print could have been there and not visible yet when graded, or be reflected in the grade. Who graded it out of curiosity

i only have pcgs slabs so far, they seem to be the most popular type in this forum. it just doesn't seem right to me that I will go to great lengths to not touch the better coins with bare hands, and if I want it graded its going to be touched and then slabbed.

True, but there are people out there who dont care what the coin looks like if it is certified in a certain grade by a TPG.

Theres a chance the coins been touched anyway before it ever got to them or you. Honestly Id say youre probably being overly cautious which I understand wanting to protect your coins. If your hands are clean and stay on the edge itll be fine. Theres a lot of real old coins in real high grades that have been touched countless times on the edges and you cant tell at all

So what happens when someone spontaneously sneezes on the coin they are grading?
