Hi, I now have collected years 1951 to 1958 straight of the australian Florin, with some other year dates here & there.

why is it that a 1955 florin coin was never minted?
that's the only one I've been trying to find (to complete 8 years) until just last week I read in krause there wasnt any 1955 Florin coin

just curious, as the Florin years set is really interesting for me

thanks!

There was no demand for them, much the same as for the Maklouf 20 cent pieces from 1986 to 1992, only these coins DID appear in mint packs only.

It is for this reason that I try to look for the 20 cent pieces of these years as singles.

Short pre decimal proof sets were made for 1955, which did NOT include the florin.
1955 was the first year when proofs were sold to the public upon request. Because not even a proof florin was made for 1955, I seriously doubt that even a pattern florin for that year was made.

My favourite pre decimal coin of the years 1955 to 1964 inclusive is the 1959 florin proof, without the 'egg'. The master die for this coin was modified to remove the 'egg' flaw, from which the proof die was then made, AFTER the business strike orders were completed.

There is a VERY noticeable improvement in the quality of the reverses of the florin business strikes from 1958 to 1959. Perhaps a new reverse master florin die was made for the years 1959 to 1963.

Yes sadly no 1955 , the previous year 1954 was a big production year by the mint ,royal visit florin 4 million , and the standard coat of arms florin 15.3 mill, so my guess the mint was trying to save some money , the population of australia was only 9 million back in 1954.

I wish there was a proof 55 , the set just looks so incomplete

yes bellyflorin, just sad there's no 1955 australian florin, but still the fun of collecting silver florins is still there with the other years

Slightly OT (but perhaps the more knowledgeable might know).
For the 1959 "egg" florin were there any non proof coins sans egg? I've looked at about 50 of them and they all have the egg. So did the egg fault happen to the master die for that year during its hubbing or did it happen early on say in making the 1st batch of working dies?
BTW Sel, is it even possible that a flaw as big as the egg could be removed (leaving no trace)or is it possible that the 9 was added again to make a 2nd master for that year? (does the date on the proof coins and on circulation coins align exactly or do the digits seem different?)

There are NO issued for circulation florins without 'egg' for 1959. Zilch. Zero.

The fault was on the master die for that year. If you look at the '59 proof florin, you can see where the fault was actually removed from the die. Proof dies were made from the master after that.

The marking for the removal of the 'egg' off the master die can be easily seen on ALL '59 proof florins. This becomes a proof positive indicator to tell the difference between a proof '59 proof florin, and an issued for circulation one that may have been tampered with.

All '59 florins without 'egg' are proofs.
