I'm looking at a 1900 date set all "s" mints except the indian head. All the coins are in XF including the barber half which may would hit AU 50. The guy wanted $200 for it....which I was about to jump on, then I examined the half under a loupe and saw lines on the obverse and reverse.....did not look like cleaning lines.....however I was not convinced that they were polishing lines from the mint either.....My question, how prominant can polishing lines be on Barber halves.....to be honest it almost looked like wire brush lines....but not as bad....and I know you guys can't give an opinion on the condition of the coin without pictures. My question that you may be able to answer is how prominant are polishing lines in this series.....I know some Peace dollars are eaten up with polishing lines.....is that the case with some Barber halves as well?

I can only offer you this:

http://blog.davidlawrence.com/index...ysis-1900-s/

Coins from the "Philippines' Hoard", San Francisco 1898, 1899 and 1900, were shipped to the islands when the US acquired them from Spain. They have returned in high grade, cleaned condition. Coins from all three series were sent.

How did the dime and the quarter look?

There is no record (to date) of heavy die polishing lines on any noted Barber $1/2.

That is to say it is not possible, but if they were that heavy someone, like David Lawrence would have noted it.

Also, as Matt mentioned, this is a Philippines hoard date which is known for high grades & cleaning.
