I just cannot grade these things. Seems like a lot of them had poor strikes, so even when looking at a ms63 example, it can look a little mushy. Asking for your opinions on this bad boy. As always, photos are taken from my phone so the luster doesn't even show. It's not super lusterous but it's not dull either. Just trying to get an idea of the grade and what this beast is worth.

Hi,
AU-55(MS-60if it's a weak strike) with the overall limiting factor being the top hair lines on the obv.

Thanks for the response! Been waiting all day for a response. lol. I'd be happy with that grade since I got this puppy for free. I bought a lot of coins and sold them for more than I paid and also kept this guy :)
Any other opinions?

I don't necessarily see wear on this coin.. but it's really tough to tell without luster being present in the photo. It's not a bad strike either for a 3cn.
If it's indeed MS, I dont see why it wouldnt go 63/64. Nothing major outside of a few minor hits on the cheek.. And the III seems to have full detail.

I agree with nwc coin above might make 63/64 but we would need to see any luster if there.

Quote: 63/64 but we would need to see any luster Is it a known agreed-to rule that for 'any' coin to reach a MS 63 or higher grade luster must be present on both the obv. and rev.? So would it be correct to say that MS 62 is the highest grade given to any coin without the presence of luster on either side? Thanks for the clarification. mdpmedia

It is not really the presence of absence of luster, it is the strength of the luster that is important. All uncirculated coins will have luster but on some, the luster can be rather dull while others look like a blazing sun when rotated in the light. As for this coin, I suspect it has decent luster but the soft photo lighting is masking it.

I believe this one is at least a MS-63. It is hard to get any 3 cent nickel with any luster showing on the coin, they all look dull to me and as you pointed out they all have a mushy look even in higher grades. But from my experience with these things I am pretty confident its no less than a 63 as I don't see very many dings on the coin itself but I wouldn't be surprised if it graded higher. Another thing is hard to find is one without any clashing as it seems just about every die clashed pretty early in their life and some have the whole outline of the head on the Reverse that I have seen

I appreciate all the input. Come christmas I'll be asking you guys the best thing to purchase for $300 or less that can take good photos. Maybe I can have a member build me a decent setup. I wish I could photograph this one accirately.

I think your current problems lies with your lighting conditions and not the camera itself, those photos are adequate for size and clarity.

Strange that I never thought about that. But my photos are from my phone so I would eventually like something more legit to use. I will look into lighting techniques! Although my phone usually decides what color it wants to make things. Usually color is spot on until I take close ups, then it makes ecerything have a darker tint.

Stop by Ikea and grab a couple of jansjo lamps around $10.00 each, very nice and easy to manipulate with their gooseneck stands.
