This one is in a PCI slab....curious how accurate the grade is. Thanks for the insight. Scratches are on the holder

I've seen similar memorial cents in NGC/PCGS holders at 66 and 67 red. That's a NICE example!

Even with the large hit on the column?

Even with 3-4 pretty large hits on the whole building. The thing that propels these to the 66-67 level is LUSTER, clean fields and nice surfaces. On a decent, very modern, Memorial cent a 65 is almost automatic. It takes flash to move up and this coin has that flash factor graders are looking for....I can see it in the pictures.

Let me help you guys trying to learn.... Start every coin grade in your mind at 70 and then deduct for what you see. The trick is learning what deductions are worth and how many there are per side. Too often people tend to guess first on the low side and then count up. In the case of this coin, do you think the reverse hit is worth more than a 3 point deduction? The reverse is very, very nice, all of the devices are very well struck and have no marks on them. Excellent fields, no dark spotting or other distractions. I can only see -2 points which puts the reverse at 68. The worst hit on this coin is in the left obverse field, that definately a -3 point deduction. If there's some other stuff I can't see in the pictures, it would be at most another point. Obverse is 66-67 and carries the most weight, final grade 67RD. Since we're talking about PCI, a lot depends on the slab year. It could be in a PCI MS-68 holder. This is good reading: http://www.k6az.com/pci/pci.htm

@BadThad that was some good info on the PCI slabs, I knew some were better than others but didn't know which were which. This one and the Jefferson D/S I posted are both in 10 digit slabs and feel both would easily cross at the grade on the label, maybe with a point upgrade as well. I will post the slabs later....probably tomorrow.

I agree with the 66 grading. I don't think it would make a 67. For it to be a 68, there can't be that big of a hit on it and PCGS agrees (search on MS-68, on the link below): http://www.pcgs.com/Lingo/M

Very much enjoyed that insight on grading, BadThad! I always do what you say most do; grade from the bottom and work up. I see how your explanation of how to go about it makes more sense.

Hmmm, since we're learning in this thread....
What about the three dots on the obverse? One above 1st 9 in 1995, one right off lincolns nose and one above "LI" in liberty. What are they? Do they not count when considering the condition of the fields? Just learning still so I figured I'd ask!

Plating bubbles, they do not generally count against the grade.
