I got this coin about a week ago and have been scratching my head. I have 6 others very similar, fully red from 1976 and 1979. The person I purchased them from took them from mint rolls whilst working at the bank in the late 70's.

This is unlike any error I have taken notice of before. I'll let the photos do the talking because I dont know how to best describe it.

The only piece of information I will add is that on the edge the 'ledge'? goes all the way around the coin.

Looks like a collar error. Collar goes around the planchet to hold it in position when stamping. If collar is not fully engaged metal flows past the edge of it.
A very good error to find: quite scarce.
Collar also has grooves for edge milling (not 2¢ which is plain edge).

Here is a 20¢ one I found recently.

You seem to find some very intriguing coins. Also the photographs really highlight how attractive the 2 cent design was.!

I have found partial collars before. I have 3x 5c and 1x $2. I have never seen a coin where the ledge goes right around the edge though. All of the partial collars I have seen have the ledge diagonal across the edge

Did the 'ledge' go all the way around on your 20c Jeff?

That is a straight collar error; the others are tilted collar errors. My 20¢ (now Nancy's) goes all the way around. Rarer than tilted therefore, more desirable and more valuable Matt!

Jeff
PS. If you have vernier calipers or micrometer try measuring diameter of coin. It will probably be a little larger than normal.

Oh I got excited when I saw the title neat error but not what I was expecting. Sometimes one forgets there are other 2 cent coins in the world.
