Florin-Dilemma.

Florin-Dilemma.
I have just removed my Florins from their home of forty years- a Dansco push in album. As is obvious many were held in by cellotape, do I attempt to remove the residue by dipping in Xylene or just live with past mistakes.

I was talking to a dealer on tuesday about the exact issue. He said eucalyptus oil removes it no problems.

The oil may remove the left over tape residue but having a closer look it appears as if the coin has toned darker where the tape wasnt in contact. You may just have to live with the uneven toning.

Removing tape residue with xylene, eucalyptus oil or some other solvent doesn't count as "cleaning" in the negative sense, since it doesn;t remove metal or attack the metal surface. However, as enworb said, if it's been there that long the parts of the coin not covered by tape may have toned darker than the parts "protected" underneath the residue. Remove it and you'll likely have a little square-piece-of-tape-shaped hole in the toning.

Which is still better than an actual glob of tape residue, in my opinion.

I experimented on a 1951 Comm. florin . The tape was so old it had already dried up and fallen off, leaving a dry, but not sticky substance. The rest of the coin has toned naturally but as you correctly stated I now have a 'tan line'. Because I have moved the coins to a Dansco Supreme this is glaringly obvious but I think I will leave them in their 'unatural' state for now. Good news is I have a full album (bar the 34/35) and a few spares. Thanks for your suggestions. Any thoughts on the microcleaners used by jewellers for cleaning diamonds etc.
