brought a couple of coins from a seller over the weekend, when I went to have a look at the invoice to check full costs before making payment arrangements, I noticed the seller has in red, phone number required for postage. i dont even think this is a lawful request, but as I see it, our phone is for us, we ring people and sometimes medical people ring me, we dont give our number out to anyone unless its absolutely necessary , if anything I will give a fictitious number or no number. what do you think of this request?

Depends. If the seller is from America, US Customs demands a telephone number for the receiving end when he fills out the paperwork. I usually just fill that with my own number (as a seller) but this guy might be playing it strictly by the book. In that case, it's a legitimate request.

I agree. He could be printing your shipping info and dropping it off at the post office and if it's going Canada to USA or vice versa than he will be using it for customs to contact you. This has happened to me.

Some of Australia Post's prepaid packages have a space or the receivers phone number. It is not a required field but optional. I would send a message to the seller advising them that you cant give out your number. It is unreasonable and if you dont want to give out your number then dont.

Sending from the US, the Customs form I must fill out will not allow me to leave the phone number for the recipient blank. This is not optional in the United States. I just sold a coin to Australia tonight, and the buyer automatically provided his telephone number with payment.

Quote: he is in the same country as I am Then, unless there's something I don't know about your postal laws, I see no reason why you should have to supply him your number.

I think the Australia post packaging may have just confused him a little. He may think phone number is a reqpuired field when it is in fact optional. Email him and let him know. Ssuperdave I have purchased things from the US ebay twice and both times did not supply my phone number and was never asked for it. I dont doubt you but am curious do ebay supply it automatically to the seller if buying from outside the US?

Quote: I dont doubt you but am curious do ebay supply it automatically to the seller if buying from outside the US? No, they do not. That why, as I mentioned above, I just fudge that entry on my own and have yet to be called on the practice since I started selling in 1999. Chances are, most sellers do it that way. It seems ludicrous and intrusive to me, too.
