I'm looking through my local dealer's bargain box of wheat cents the other day and see this!! When I get home, I compare it with one of my steel wheaties. Here's the reverse comparison. Then, I get out my magnet. Doh! Somebody out there was quite the prankster!

Out of curiosity, would you have kept it for its rarity, or sold it to the highest bidder?

That's a very interesting question. My first reaction was "I'd keep it, of course!" I have "found" a few coins that I might never have bought. My 1909-S IHC is an example. But thinking about it in concrete terms, if I could nearly pay off my mortgage with a single coin, then that's a no-brainer. So I'd sell for sure. My collection is nice and I'm proud of it, but I'm just not a player at that level. PS: This was a good test of my bargain-bin eyes. At least I have some assurance that I'd be able to spot the real deal if it ever came along!

Ouch. But deep down, you knew it.

Its just too big of a pay day to say no too. Unless you have millions and millions Its to much to keep. The only reason I can think to justify keeping it would be to sit on it for a while if you think the economy will improve to get a better price

bibd, it seems that your prankster has been through California too. I found these guys in a 1000-count bag last week.

Scotty: That's incredible! I'm a light wheat searcher, but I had still never expected to find one of these in the wild, let alone a dozen! Despite it being fake, that 1943 "Copper" is still one of my coolest curiosity finds.
I suspect there is a coin collector science teacher to blame in your case!

Pretty interesting to hear so many being found. Too bad it wasn't the real one. If I found a real one, I would have kept it for a few months and then eventually have it graded and sold.
You have great eyes for spotting it though.

Nice conversation piece, I wouldn't mind having one. If it was real, I'd be selling, no doubt.
