I would just tell him no thanks. We technically avoid ebay fees here as well. If we see something on ebay that a member has, we message them on here and they sell to us for cheaper avoiding ebay and paypal. so we are guilty too. Just tell him no thanks, and if you want, let him know it's against the rules.

There is actually very little against policy as long as the sale is completed on ebay. They just want their money. I have negotiated with sellers on price and have had buyers negotiate with me. Listings were occasionally changed or ended. It is all fine as long as ebay gets their cut. Never had a problem as I always stayed on ebay.

The grey area happens when discussion occurs for sales off of ebay for items which are not currently listed on ebay, even if they have been listed in the past. I have read the rules in depth and I think if one were to word such an offer correctly, it would be alright. A former ebay employee I know personally also told me that such cases are left alone, but you have to word it correctly like I said.

I think ebay is aware of this and since they want all the money they possibly can get they just recently implemented the "no email" ban regardless of what the message says. This may blanket any outside sales, even if it gets through the loophole.

btw, I'm not suggesting one attempt such an outside offer, just stating what I believe to be true as far as information.

Changing a listing from auction to bin is not against ebay policy. Ending an auction early and paying for it outside PayPal/eBay is the problem. ebay wants the commission from the sale, that's it.
