I've been searching through hundreds of these King George nickels I have and after a while they start to look the same. I'm on http://www.coinsandcanada.com with pictures but it's not helping alot.

From what I can see, on the near rim the end of the "S" in cents flares out making it close to the rim. On the far rim, the "S" doesn't flare out.

The s near rim has concave fields.
s far from rim has flat fields.
The shape of the s is slightly flared out on near as middross mentioned.
Once you have one of each for sure it gets easier to tell the difference.

The way I do it is to look at the width of the part of the S in CENTS that is closest to the rim.

If the space between the rim and the S is significantly smaller that the width of the S, its a near rim.

If the space between the rim and the S is nearly as wide as the S, its a far rim.
