This is a picture from the internet so my apologies for the poor image quality. Does it look to anyone like this might be a 3/2 variety?
Thanks,
peter

I am not seeing anything. the closest would be the FS5c-013.3 variety, but the ball above the date should be fully round, with the wear it does not appear that is the case.Inside the 3 it does not look like an underlying 2 at mid point.
The reverse is supposed to have a very good die stage marker for this type,a crack progressing to a Retained Cud over AMER in AMERICA, more prominent in mid to late die stages, but a light die crack should still be seen in early die state.

Maybe someone else can chime in.

Thanks for your help RK. What I thought I was seeing is a faint portion of a '2' just to the left of the top ball of the '3' and again to the left of the bottom ball. Also, there appeared to be traces on the inside of the '3' at the top. Here's a picture of the AMER portion of the reverse. The only place where it looks to me like there might be a Cud is directly over the 'M'. Perhaps this can help to prove or disprove an over date.

I'm not really sure, but I don't see much and probably wouldn't buy it as a 3/2. That particular variety is always really tough. It's never strong, examples don't even look like eachother, and the date on most Shield nickels is slightly messed up. All this makes this variety one that I'd probably only get slabbed or for very cheap.

I also think it's over-rated. It gets a bump in value because it has its own little section in the Red Book and because albums give it a slot. It really isn't that rare compared to the 1883 mintage as a whole. Except for the more evident repunched 1866, there are similar varieties (as far as visibility and rarity) with pretty much every single date in the series, I don't really know why this one became so coveted.

Based on your reverse photo I believe it does not have the markers for an over date. As stated by hesgut,it is a really hard variety to distinguish, especially in lower grades where there is a lot going on in and near the date.
Just my opinion.

It doesn't match any of the five known 1883/2 overdates. I think it comes closest to a very early state FS5c-013.1 but the "denting" of the ball does not match.
