I found an Indian Heard in a coin collection that appears to have and error on the obverse. The face shows the outline of another exact face of the indian. Is this possibly an error? Thanks in advance for any and all help...

Looks like it could be acid damage or a really odd counterfeit. Would also like to see the reverse.

I will post the reverse side when I get home from work today. The coin was in first my uncle's collection then passed to my dad and now to me. I would think the coin has been in family hands at least since the 60's. Thanks for the feedback and will post reverse around 6-630 EST today.

Thanks Conder101, I did use a toothpick and it appears to be a hard ridge. I do have other Indian Heans that show a partial amount of this but they are related to different coloring along the face. Not really knowing much about what I can or what I shouldn't try to check for smudge.

I don't see how that could have happened at the mint. If I were you, I would research the mint mark positions for the 1908S to verify it is not a counterfeit. They were counterfeiting coins in the 60s (I have a fake S-VDB from this time period). If it is some sort of error, I doubt it would carry much of a premium due to the PMD and condition of the coin. Hard hole to fill, thanks for sharing!

there are only a few mintmark locations for this coin. if you post a clear closeup pic of the mintmark , I can tell you if the coin is real or fake.
Separately, there is no way the front could be double struck without the reverse being equally affected. So, the only question now, in my mind, is whether this is a damaged 1908-S or whether it is a complete counterfeit.
