1908 S Indian Head Error?

I finally had some time to take this coin to a coin company that can send coins to PCGS for certification. Needless to say this didn't solve anything as one dealer said he was 100% sure it was error and oddity (doubled face). he said that the details he saw under a microscope proved it out. He wanted it brought back so his partner could decide how best to sell it. Brought in on another day and after 10 seconds he said it wasn't doubled. He placed the value of the coin between $90 - $100 (key date). Oh well it was exciting while it lasted. Thanks again everyone for weighing in on the coin.

There are no known double dies for the 1908 or 1908-S Indian Head cents. The lump between Liberty's eye and headband is a clash from the C in CENT on the reverse.

The extra outline of Liberty's face is most likely Die Deterioration, Machine Doubling or a combination, and is not die doubling. One reason I say this is because the large die cracks signify a very worn out die. There is a lot going on with the coin that makes me wonder... wish I could view it in-hand.

If you want a definitive answer, I would submit the coin to Rick Snow for a very small fee. It should be easy to nail down the die pairing, as only 8 obverse and 8 reverse dies are known for the 1908-S. If one of your dealers has the Snow Guide, then compare the date and mintmark locations.
