We're going on vacation this summer to the Outer Banks. I noticed that a local rental outfit has weekly rentals on metal detectors. I've never done it before, but I'm fascinated by the possibility of finding something worthwhile.

Since you guys are more experienced I'm asking for advice. Is it a waste of my time? Where would I search? Is it too difficult to learn in a week with a rental?

It may matter where you stay at the Outer Banks. Detecting is not allowed on the National Seashore which I believe starts below Nags Head. I detected a few years ago when we spent a few days at Nags Head. I didn't find a whole lot but it was fun. Give this link a try these guys do a lot of detecting down there. http://www.outerbanksnc.net/ship.html

We're staying in Waves which is below Nags Head and above Hatteras if I'm correct. Maybe I'll have to drive further North while the family is at the beach.

They know I'm not a beach person, so they won't mind me going off to explore. My grandkids are going and I think they would get a kick out of finding something.

The newer machines are pretty much turn on and go ,, there is a learning curve if you want to get into the custom programs ,,but if you stay in the pre programs they are very simple to use and you acually can be finding good targets within minutes of starting.

Just be careful where you detect as some areas are definitely off limits ,, and whatever you do collect all the trash targets and dispose of them in a trash can, and cover all the holes you dig,, these simple things will help to protect the hobby and preserve the areas where detecting is allowed.

Have fun and I hope you find some good stuff !!
