I bought a few lots of florins on ebay whilst I was away in Kalgoorlie on a job.
These turned up in one of the lots.
Perfectly good coins ruined, I can even still smell the brasso on them

To me that is bordering on sacrilege.
I will add it to my collection of Canberra florins as I don't have one that has been so badly mistreated in that album.
I think some people think that a bit of a polish up improves the look of a coin

Unfortunately, this one is much, much better than the one I just looked at in my LCS.

The one at my local store was holed, polished, partly gilded, and had a big X carved through poor George...

Why.... To the best Australian pre-decimal type too!

Had the person sold coins before? If so they should have known better. If they are a newbie liquidating granny's collection then it might be a case of not knowing better.

I think this was a case of ignorance, I'ts a shame but if people don't know how to treat coins there will always be some damaged in this way

Yeh I bet dealers have some stories to tell. People cleaning up their old coins to make them look 'shiny' so they will get more for them
