I just got a 1955 half penny, but PCGS states 1955(p), I didn't know any 1955 and 1959 half penny were from Perth Mint. PCGS made a mistake? I also checked their website, there are 11 of them in this grade marked 1955(p). Edited by ADMISLSE 10/12/2012 12:10 am

The 1955 1/2 penny was apparently struck in Perth according to Maccas but doesn't have a mintmark

1955 was made in Perth as far as I know and doesn't have a mintmark.

Stupid question from someone who doesn't know much about Australian coinage. If it is a 1/2 penny, why does the holder say 1/2D? I was thinking that it represented the switch to decimal currency, but didn't that happen in the '60s? Thanks for any answers.

d is to penny as $ is to dollar basically.

"d" is the traditional symbol for the pre-decimal penny. "p" is used for the decimal penny.

The modern penny has a long history with roots in the denarius. One artifact of this lineage is that the penny was abreviated with a "d."

Maccas book 19th edition page 78 Quote: Although it doesn't have a mint mark, the 1955 half penny was also struck at the Perth Mint

Thanks guys. It's the little things like this that keep the hobby interesting. If it weren't for this forum, I would know nothing about Australian coinage. Thanks again.
