I just got a 1955 half penny, but PCGS states 1955(p), I didn't know any 1955 and 1959 half penny were from Perth Mint. PCGS made a mistake? I also checked their website, there are 11 of them in this grade marked 1955(p).

The 1955 1/2 penny was apparently struck in Perth according to
Maccas but doesn't have a mintmark

1955 was made in Perth as far as I know and doesn't have a mintmark.

Stupid question from someone who doesn't know much about Australian coinage. If it is a 1/2 penny, why does the holder say 1/2D? I was thinking that it represented the switch to decimal currency, but didn't that happen in the '60s? Thanks for any answers.

"d" is the traditional symbol for the pre-decimal penny. "p" is used for the decimal penny.

The modern penny has a long history with roots in the denarius. One artifact of this lineage is that the penny was abreviated with a "d."

Thanks guys. It's the little things like this that keep the hobby interesting. If it weren't for this forum, I would know nothing about Australian coinage. Thanks again.
