So I set up to sell at the flea market yesterday and I had brought 2 coins with me to sell because I had upgraded and needed to free up some cash (I don't normally sell coins).

A guy comes by and looks at my coins, one is an ANACS MS63 Morgan. He quickly glances at it and puts it down. He pulls out his greysheet and then offers me $20 under my asking price. He tells me he is a dealer and he has to make money and HIS GREYSHEET prices only apply to PCGS and NGC slabs. Not my problem. I asked him to look at the coin and did he notice that the reverse was semi-PL but hits on the obverse held it back to 63? He immediately dimissed the comments and said ANACS cant be trusted to be acurate. I said on Morgans, they are the best and I even mentioned John Roberts. He did not care.

He picks up a raw 1909-S and I could tell he wanted it. I graded it possibly a little agressively at F-12 and priced it at $99 (starting point). He tells me it is G4 at best and asked me how I graded it. I told him I used ANA Grading Standards photo grading book. He says, you cant use that and I HAVE to use PCGS Photograde only! He then tells me that grading standards change and ANA standards dont apply anymore. He offered $75 and I held firm at $80. No sale.

Thanks, just had to share.

If you post pictures, we could give you our opinion on the grades.

However, I see lots of overgraded coins in flea markets.
I usually don't bother telling sellers because they wouldn't believe strangers - it's usually a ploy to reduce the price.

Occasionally I see undergraded coins but not often.

Y'see, things like *this* make the words of BigFredd play back loudly in my mind. (Specifically the TPG talk.)

That's just negotiating. This gent's approach would turn me off, too. He was just trying to establish credibility with his background ... I'm a coin dealer, only deal in PCGS, etc. It might work with someone lacking basic knowledge of coins. Congrats for holding your ground.

No big thing at all. That is what a flea market is. A place where you say one price, someone haggles or chews you down or attempts to. That is flea marketing. People do that all the time at coin shows too. Same thing at camera, gun, knife, computer shows too. I would almost think something is wrong if he accepted your prices. And for him to add that he is a dealer too, is also possibly just flea market talk. Usually nothing said is for real, nothing said is supposed to be believed. It is the way of flea marketing.
