Stopped by my (formerly) local coin store today to pick up some holed coins for my handfasting cords (getting married tomorrow). I found a 1995 Krone from Denmark and a 1918 5 Centimes from France, so that solved that need. As I was looking, though, I noticed a bin under one of the counters with War Nickels for $1.75 each.

I quick ran the math in my head, and ran it again when I got home, and concluded that that was definitely under spot price, so I picked up eight. Wish I had more cash, though, I'd love to clear the box out.

I think these are usually sold slightly under melt.

Being 35% silver, it is harder to sell them.

Melt is $1.88, so a fair deal.

Can these be turned in to a refiner for melting? Always wondered. Good luck tomorrow, and kudos for being on the forum the day before, lol.

I sold off the worst of my war nickels to a refiner without a problem.
Also some .500 Canadian dimes.

Good find. But, yes, War Nickels are often found under spot. This is due to their unique metal composition. War Nickels contain slightly less than 10% manganese which complicates the refining process. Good find though and congrats on getting married!!
