Based on the ones I saw, yours look like environment damage - there are too many "shiny" points that resemble nickel. The copper-rich coins are of an uniform color. See article published on the RCNA journal a couple of months ago.

If you send it to me, I can analyze it for you with the XRF in my lab (non-destructive). I wrote a paper on these "brown nickels" earlier this year in the Canadian Numismatic Journal, they turn brown due to elevated copper content.
If it is a mixing error, I can provide a report - Louis Chevier of CCCS will then slab the coin, with the copper-nickel content (in %) on the comments. Louis accepts analytical reports coming from me, and I even occasionally analyze coins for him as well.

I bought one of ASYN about six months ago and returned it right away as you could still see nickel spots on it when it was in hand. I am not suggesting yours is one of these artdio.

Use the message system here - you can send me a note. Right now I am making lunches for the kids tomorrow, so not anywhere near my coin computer...

Here is an update. This coin is an alloy mixing error, 79.7% Cu and 19.7% Ni. CCCS will certify these coins, providing I have analyzed them and can provide CCCS with the results. Good eye artdio!

Having a few of these set aside, is there anyone that has the years that these errors have been found in? Currently I think I have an '84, '86 and '87. None of them are in pristine shape but they are an anomaly which makes them interesting.

It has literally taken years to get these acknowledged as errors. I have a bunch. Has been a battle to get the "old school" snow bank theory to go away. artdio, this one will fit well with the hoard I have. SPP was instrumental in both interest and the equipment/skill to get this published....hell, he even wrote the paper. The alloy mixing error paper is just another fine example of evolution of our hobby. I was able to get the first batch certified as they are...alloy errors in CCCS hard holders noting the alloy numbers. I then gave SPP one of the "test" coins in a hard slab as a thank you for his efforts. A thank you for his fine work. It truly is wonderful to be able to call him a friend! (hard to get near him due to his body guard tho......) MM

RogerD, we have really only analyzed a small population (less than 20 coins, only two 1987 coins have been tested)... send me a PM if you are interested in having your coins analyzed. The analysis is free - the catch is that I get to use/publish the data.
