This is a 1947D.The entire surface (obv, rev and edge) has a light, copper color. The surfaces are smooth and the coloring is evenly distributed. The image is not great but the color is about right. There is no bright, nickel finish anywhere on the coin. There are several small, green spots on both sides, looks like corrosion. Any comments? Image: copper nickel.jpg 76.34 KB
I've done a fair amount of metal-detecting/coin shooting in the past, and nickels are pretty susceptible to "environmental damage" if they lay on or in the ground for very long. I wonder if your coin wasn't lost, and later found by someone?
Every coin carries a little story...if only we can unravel it.
well, I picked it up in pocket change...I've never seen another nickel that looked like this, not even partially discolored like this one. I'm not a metal expert but does nickel tarnish to a copper color if exposed to the elements?
