This might a technical AU, but Jeffs like this are bought and sold as low end BUs by every seller I know. I don't actually see anything the is "definitely" wear. I see areas were there might be something or it could just be the picture. The strikes were so inconsistent, and the bag/roll hits so common that it's really difficult to tell. If I sold this coin, I would call it a BU (not choice or gem, but BU). I've gotten in Jeffs advertised as UNCs that were worse than this many times. This isn't the best piece I've seen either as far as BUs go, but, like I said, it would be happily bought and sold as a low BU, by anyone on ebay. So I will say MS-61/62....if not technically, certainly by market grading.

Thank you all for your replies! Hesgut. I hear you loud and clear and agree with you. This was sold to me as low BU. Under the plasic at the shop it looked a lot better. Out of the plastic I am not so impressed. Looking at it out of the plastic, in hand, with the pics, and with your comments I would give it AU58. Has anyone else noticed that AU Jeffersons find themselves being frequently marketed as MS+ ? I like Jeffersons...but I do find them to be a real challange.

I think this coin is smack dab in the "slider" category,a Au55-58 that a lot of sellers would "slide" up to a MS60-61 but I am not good at grading. That's just my 2 5 cents worth ha-ha. John1

If you paid $8 or less for this coin, you're fine. I actually don't see any conclusive wear at all. Monticello looks good taking into account the strike, which is a decent one for the year, you nearly have 5FS. The ear area looks alright. I don't see anything wrong with the upper hair area. There is something going on with the cheek that could be wear, planchet flaw, or just the picture. Also, 1938 nickels at all three mints rarely had very good luster, so don't worry if it looks a little more dull. Unless the cheek area IS wear or you point something else out not seen in the picture, I'm gonna call this an MS-62. It certainly would sell as such. I've also sold many many BU Jefferson nickels on ebay. I keep extensive records. I can tell you from my data that this coin would average about $7-$8 in my auction style listings starting at .99. If you wanted a "shiny" 1938 with very nice details, you'd be at about $13-$15. If you wanted high end slabbed or high grade 6FS, the price has lots of variance.

I agree with low MS as well. Nice luster, clean rims and fields, just a bit soft and baggy; as many early Jeffersons are
