hey everyone , have a look at this key date 1885 quarter . http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...t_715wt_1287I compared it to the ICCS F15 that is listed and this one puts it to shame totally....what grade do you think... I think they have it spot on at VF 20 to 30 as the strike looks full maybe a bit weak only ? mid grade 25 ?

If it is real, I'd say VF20. It appears to have been harshly cleaned at one point and has re-toned.

I dont see any evidence of cleaning and I know the seller very well.If it was cleaned they would have stated it was..Also if there was any doubt of it being real they would have sent it in to have it checked...

You asked for opinions and my opinion is the the coin has been cleaned and re-toned. YMMV

All the parallel scratches make me think it has been cleaned as well.

Ok I see them now, I guess it could be ? If so it must have been long ago as the toning looks quite nice

I'd say VF (cleaned) as well. The third photo is the one where the parallel scratches really seem to show up.

I sent the seller a question about the cleaning and they posted the question ...Their answer was yes under the loupe the could see hairlines ..... So that answers that... But its still a super nice example for sure.

+1, VF20 cleaned.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning... -from PCGS website

Quote: But its still a super nice example for sure. Maybe but it wouldn't grade @ PCGS, NGC and probably ANACS and IGC. ICCS would grade it but in all likelihood would note the cleaning. I spotted the cleaning at first glance and any TPG would too. I wouldn't consider this coin to be a "super nice example" but rather a problem coin. YMMV

Obviously cleaned and retoned . Still a decent coin net F15 details and if you do buy a coin like this remember hard to resell when the time comes. Personally I would wait for a better example. As the saying goes "problem coins don't solve themselves!"

someone back in one of the topics mentioned about what is a cleaned coin..So if a coin is in pocket and rubs its cleaned ? if someone wipes it its cleaned ? or rinses under or in hot soapy water again cleaned ? and what about dipping is that not cleaned aswell ? Just saying folks, when a pic is blown up that large super small imperfection will show and dont forget to what degree has the coin been cleaned ? we dont know .. The toning looks original so maybe it was wiped .I have myself in my collection coins that have been clearly cleaned but were not noted as such so again what and how would they determine - note it as cleaned? Im sure we all have coins that id put under the big glass would show signs of this somewhere in the past right ?
maybe we should have a topic just on Cleaned or something to this effect.. what do you think.... oh and 54dollarcoin have you seen a nicer 1885 ? I think not its one of the hardest to find in decent shape as most appear to have very weak rev.and obv sides... Just look at the ICCS F15 listed its nowhere this nice ..just my opinion

Why are you so invested in your opinion of this coin? If you like it, buy it. I would pass on it except at a VERY low price. You seem to think it was lightly rubbed. That's your opinion and you are certainly entitled to it. I think it was harshly cleaned and obviously so. That's my opinion. The fact that there aren't nicer ones on ebay doesn't change the fact that this is a problem coin and will always remain so.

to each his own as they say ... You are entitled to think what you want ...And is this forum not here to discuss things so why are you so critical of what I say ? Further more where did I say it was rubbed ..I merely asked a question read it again ...I quote myself " So if a coin is in pocket and rubs its cleaned ? if someone wipes it its cleaned ? or rinses under or in hot soapy water again cleaned ? and what about dipping is that not cleaned aswell ? Just saying folks, when a pic is blown up that large super small imperfection will show and dont forget to what degree has the coin been cleaned ?
As you can see Senex I am asking a question not making a statement...

:) no prob. That's why its called a forum...Well Senex if you know the 1885 quarter series as well as I do , you would know that not to many coins show up with full rev & obv. in tact...Most have worn dates or both...This is my reference to : super nice & the toning as well .....Most that I have come across are all cleaned and bright you know the type , ..A coin this old will not be bright , there's dirt ect..... But if you notice the listing the seller did post a question I asked about the cleaned issue
