How do you determine the value or what you pay for graded coins?

I want to start a small basic slabbed set. Like roosevelts, washingtons and possibly some halves but I have no experience with these.

For example, therea an NGC PF66 Washington on ebay Buy It Now for $15.88 free shipping. Is that an ok price?
I just need some guidelines for values on these before I go overpaying.

Online research is available - search past recent auctions and fleacebay.

I use numismedia as a baseline as well. Don't forget, price guides are just that...a guide. For modern coinage ( Indian cents and newer), I believe numismedia is fairly accurate.

BUT....I should mention this first. YOU need to learn how to grade. Just because a TPG say coin X is MS65...coin can be overgraded or undergraded.

So, expose yourself to as many TPG slabbed coins as possible in the series you want to collect. Buy a quality loupe....and good luck.

Should have also included this quote....

"BUY THE COIN, NOT THE HOLDER"....which goes with the other advice I mentioned above.

I use numismedia, too - and ngc and pcgs. They all have valuations for their own slabs. Generally, the TPGs value their coins high, but you can get a *relative* sense of value that may help you make a more accurate determination. Gray sheet and coin values don't hurt either, but the online stuff is too easy to access.

Happy coin huntin'!

I use a combination of NumisMedia and ebay completed sales.

That's what I do. That way you get a realistic value based on actual sales.

ebay is sometimes high do to the fees they take but theyre the best bet. If you just shop around online youll get prices all over the place and depending where you look some will have insanely high prices

I agree. I enjoy the fact that I can easily access NumisMedia and ebay from my Droid while at a coin show.

Good point. One should take this into account when looking at their completed sales prices.

Study before buying and I find buying via auction rather than BIN offers the best values for Moderns.
