I know a gentleman, now 96 years old, who owned a small town general store which he closed and retired from about 20 yrs ago. For some unknown reason he started taking all of the cents that people paid with and threw them into buckets. Over time this became 9 half filled 5 gal pails. He recently decided to sell them and I have purchased them. They are pretty filthy and cleaning them up and sorting has been almost mind numbing. They are running about 7% wheats and the balance Lincolns. We have gone thru about 30% of them and picked out anything that needs to be studied, i.e. 1955s looking for DD. What do I do with the rest of the memorial cents besides take them to the bank? Do they have any value, I know I cannot sell them for melt. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thx Jim

There are alot of varieties/errors in the memorial cents also!
if you dont have the inclination to search them, then coinstar is the place to take them, no rolling like if you take them to the bank .

Comerce bank has those counting machines and no fee. Perhaps I have too much time but I look at all the cents. I seperate wheat in 1 batch and copper memorial in another and the zincolns go with the rest of the change to the bank.

No joke...I wrote the book for your cause. You don't even have to order it from me, there are hundreds of outlets to buy it...but for your purpose it fits the bill perfectly.

"looking through lincoln cents" is a very informative book with great pictures to compare to. ps chuck.. my girlfriend still picks on me; first because I bought a book about pennies, and second because it took me 3 days to read cover to cover. I praise you on it though =]

I have both those books from coppercoins. Might pay to go through all those coins for that one that may be worth a fortune. By me LaSalle and many other banks will take coins for no charge. I go to a bank several times a month and get a $50 bag of cents, look through them, take them back to another bank. IF you want to have some fun here is something to try. Not long ago there was a story in the Chicago area papers of a man that saved pennies (cents) for about 60 years. He called his bank and asked if they would pick them up. Not only was the story in the newspaper but they had photos of bank guards with wheel barrels full of the coins on the way into the bank. The story said there was about $80,000 in coins. What happened next was a run on that bank from every coin dealer in the area buying all those coins and for face.

I have over 6,000 wheats and ? lincoln. I know the years but I haven't figured out the errors yet. Help... What's the best book or place to figure this out? I know there's a lot of info here but it's so hard to keep looking at them.

See the post right above yours docsfishn. I too have coppercoins book. I can't remember the name, but I'm sure it's on his site. I think it's "A Guide to Lincoln Cents" by Charles Daughtery. It is a wise investment. You can also use his website, coppercoins.com and type in searches there.
What I started doing, was I bought a fishing tackle box that is four drawers high. Each drawer divides to about twenty 3X3 pockets. You can make them any size you want as there are grooves in place to hold the dividers. I then started sorting by date. From there I start comparing them to his book. Definitely stops you from flipping pages like a maniac.

Great idea tights24, I started sorting coins this weekend and was becoming overwhelmed with what to do with them. Got the husband a tackle box a while back he hasn't used yet. I shall borrow it back for a bit. Fishnwidow
