My bank account and I badly needed a rest after nearly completing a Dansco 7070 (I lack the two Seated dollars). As a result I have begun to collect a complete set of Franklin Halves. This meets all my collecting needs right now. In all grades they are relatively plentiful. The Libery Bell and Franklin are I think an attractive design. They are a short set with nostalgia for me that spans my baby boomer childhood from the year after I was born - 1948 until the year Kennedy was killed (I was in the tenth grade). I can remember getting my weekly allowance in Franklins. There are no killer dates to prevent commpleting the set like my Lincoln cents that stopped short with the 1909-s vdb, or the Mercury dimes with the 1916-D. I already have most of the first half of the set with all the better dates and I am going for BU in the later dates since they are so inexpensive raw. Anyone else like Franklins? If so what are your reasons? Colin

Hey Okie, I like Franklins, have a few Proofs thats all. The only thing I don't like about them is the extremely low relief and seemingly soft strikes on them. Remind me of Washingtons with the relief. This I think would keep me from doing a set of them. Like the Proofs though, different look all together. JMO

I have several sets of Franklins, I took about 2 years putting my last set together, I wanted all high grade raw coins, after I got them I sent the whole set in and had them graded. Most came back MS65 and a couple came backMS67, I had 22 of them that came back Full Bell Lines. I also got the 4 Franklin comems that came out last year, and the quarter euro comem from France, there were only 15,000 of them made, I bought 10 from the mint in France and have sold a couple to some serious collectors here. I am working on a set of the Proofs now, there are some expensive ones here.

okie, I think the Franklin half dollars are a great set to collect for all the reasons you've mentioned. Another consideration would be the Standing Liberty halves in circulated condition. I'm not sure about key dates, but I picked up plenty of SLs in F to EF at very reasonable prices. I really like them in circulated condition, they have a lot of history.

In my opinion, it was a wrong decision to change from Franklin to Kennedy. The Franklin design was fantastic and had a too short of time. But, politics, and mania took over from reason.

I love collecting Franklins. There one of my favorites. I think they have been very under valued in the past. With all the baby boomers (like me) they are becoming very popular and they are starting to rise in value. At the coin show I attended in Long Beach, Ca. in Feb. the dealers agreed with me as well. I just submitted a 1953 Franklin proof and received a PF65Cam I will post it when I get it back.

I just recently finished a circulated set. Got almost all of them for $5 a piece. Like maybe two were $10 a piece. Ty

Yep! I think they're prtetty spiffy. One of the first circulated sets I completed. I hadn't given much thought to it, but the mint began making Franklins the year I was born. Another good reason for liking them.

I only have one Franklin half, it's a pretty cool coin but for now I'm steering clear of collecting things other than Indian Head pennies. I say you should go for collecting the Halves.

The Franklin is a nice design, and well worth collecting, if that turns your crank. I have always liked them, but have never really thought much about putting together a set. Maybe I'll have to do that!

I too am working on a collection. Right now I am just getting circulated coins to fill holes than will begin to replace with MS coins.
I am also working on a Kennedy collection.

I started collecting Frankies because my dad said they were the ugliest coin ever designed :) Like several people have mentioned here, they began in my birth year and ran a too short time. I am working on a proof set and those rascals can cost some real money. One of the things I have found interesting about graded frankies is the difference between the full bell designation by NGC and PCGS. I believe NGC grades them harder than PCGS which seems to flow counter to their reputation. Anyone else notice that?

rons what years do you still need? I am also trying to fill the proof set of the series and I do have a couple duplicates, some from winning multiple auctions at the same time, and a couple from forgetting I already had a year when I bid at work
