I am going to get a box of cents today and try roll hunting for the first time. How can I be sure that the rolls are bank wrapped and not fed wrapped? Do the rolls look different? Should I ask the teller for a "bank wrapped box"?

And don't worry, I will post my finds and try to include pictures (the only camera I have is my iPhone so they won't be great).

I am relatively new to coin collecting and am looking for cents to fill holes in my circulated coin folders.

Also, how do you feel about dumping coins at the same bank you pick them up at?

You can simply ask them where they were wrapped

When I pick up bank boxes, the boxes the bank gives me are the boxes the bank gives me - period. I don't get to pick bank-wrapped vs armored car company-wrapped vs fed-wrapped.

Regarding pickup vs dump sites, I think a lot of roll hunters use separate locations (maybe even physically distant from each other). I use two different banks which use two different armored car courier companies.

Good luck - and if you're going into it to find silver dimes, quarters or halves, don't set your level of expectations too high & thereby set yourself up for disappointment (like I did). The pickings are pretty meager in most areas these days. Most roll hunters don't regularly harvest generous crops of silver coins on an ongoing basis.

There are still members getting decent returns. I wish I could say I'm one of them.

NEVER I REPEAT NEVER dump at the same place you pick coins up from you will get dirty looks and once they realize you are doing this they will not let you pick coins up from them ever again....banks can refuse to whoever they want and whenever they want...just a tip from someone who has done it....did it the first time I picked up about 30$ worth of pennies and nickels and the next day took them back and they were like wth and told me not to do that anymore...lets just say I do not go to that bank for dumps anymore but pickups oh ya sure they dont mind that at all as long as I'm not dumping them back to them haha

I personally don't ask for bank wrapped rolls vs. fed wrapped rolls. I simply walk into a bank and ask for the coins and take what I can get. I also keep a very informal notation in my head as to where I am getting good returns or not, but it is really very scattered. So while I use several banks for pick ups, usually I simply go to what ever bank is convenient for me to go to, and not what bank had the best return last box.

And don't dump back at the same bank, ESPECIALLY pennies. For reasons stated above, you will get dirty looks at best, and at worst you will burn a bridge with that bank. Pick a different branch and find out how you can turn in coins to them.

For pennies specifically consider a Coinstar machine. Yes, if you cash out you pay Coinstar some money ($2.45 if you are dumping a whole box, $2 is you hoard coppers like I do). But then you don't spend time rerolling 40-50 rolls of pennies if you dump bank requires it, and you don't have to figure out which bank to go dump the coins at. I roll hunt nickels, dimes, and quarters, and I have never had the same problem dumping $250+ of nickels, dimes, and quarters than I had trying to dump $20-$25 in pennies. It'll save you some major headaches. (Plus I just find it fun to walk into my local Savemart with 4-6 boxes of pennies for the Coinstar machine and people watch the strange looks I get from other customers... LOL!

I guess I was a little late at the bank.. The person who has the vault key left at 4 and I got there at 4:30. All they could give me today was 5 rolls, which satisfied the itch for today. As I was walking out, I ran into the guy who runs the local coin shop and he gave me $40 in halves to sort through. For cents, I got one 1958-D Wheat cent and two Canadian cents; a 1962 and a 1985. Nothing else special. No key dates or double dies etc. I got plenty of halves for my folders though. Ended up keeping $7.50 to fill holes. All were JFK halves. No silver. Thank everyone for the tips! I'm going back tomorrow for a box of cents and halves.

@DobermanOwner: Halves you might have a bit of trouble getting as the bank doesn't normally have a stock of them because they are unpopular in day to day use. They might give you what they have on hand, but from my experience once they get $500 to fill a box they get shipped out ASAP.

Let us know how it goes!

The tellers told me that there were two boxes of halves in their vault and that they would set them back for me.

And on a side note, I just found an 1882 IHC at work in a desk with other cents. Its a little worn, but hey I'll take it!

In five years visiting hundreds of banks and searching hundreds of thousands of dollars in coin, I have never once seen a "bank-wrapped" or a "fed-wrapped" roll.

Thanks for the info.. I have just heard people using those terms and assumed that they were different types of rolls. I was hoping to aviod rolls with all 50 coins being the same date. Now I know to just take whatever the bank gives me.

D.O., I hope it didn't sound like I was demeaning your crh'ing terms in my reply, as I wasn't...usually I call customer rolled coin - CWR, and machine wrapped rolls as - MWR.
Good luck with the hunt!

I must be lucky. I have a bank that sell me boxes & also wants me to bring back the coins when I am done. They have a counting machine & one of the tellers told me the bank gets credit on the amount of money that they process. Never heard of that one before but that makes it easy.

They also call me they they get odd coins. Picked up 2 silver Kennedy's yesterday for face value plus a bunch of other stuff. They had a charity dump a bunch of coins.

Taking a dozen donuts to the bank every once in a while also helps.

I went in to pick up my boxes and found out that the person with the vault key went home early! Luckily the teller I've been dealing with kept out a box of cents for me. She said since there was more value with the halves, they had to stay in the vault. Trying again later today! The teller even gave me a bank bag to put all the coins I'm not keeping in and said that I should bring them back to her when I'm done. She even saved all the wheat pennies she found during the day for me. Need I say that I now love this bank?!

I found a few keepers in this box:
Wheat cents: 1910, 1942, 1945-S, 1945, 1945-D, 1950, 1050-D, 1951-D, 1952-D (2), 1956-D, 1957-D (4)
Canadian cents: 1964, 1968, 1987, 1994, 2005

I also found a bunch of 2009 Lincoln's and one 1960 BU. I will try to snap a picture later an post it later.

I also think I may have found a few CAMs and WAMs, but I'm not sure... I need pictures to compare them to. Can someone post a good link or two?
