Hi All,
I recently purchased a Czechoslovakian 1948 Commemorative Coin of the
600th anniversary of Charles University. I am looking for a meaning
for what I think is a mint mark. Between the feet of the standing St.
Wenceslas (sp?) under magnification you can see the name of the design-
er (Spaniel) and impressed on that are 2 dots. I am wondering if those
two dots are the mint mark and if they are what do they indicate about
where this coin was minted. I am very new to this so if I have asked
anything obvious or stupid please be kind.
Thank you,
Mike

I don't have the coin, and have not seen any detailed photos either ... but the coins from Czechoslovakia were all minted in Kremnica (today in Slovakia). As far as I know, the CS(S)R coins did not have mintmarks. But what those two dots could be - no idea. Since Otakar Å paniel designed many coins, maybe you could compare his "signature" on different coins/designs?

Christian,
Thank you for the reply. I bought the coin on ebay and the
seller stated that the coin was minted at the " Royal Mint --
London," a suspect statement since the sparse information that I could find stated as you that Czech coins of that era
were minted in Kremnica.
As for the 'dots' one is directly over the circular part of
'p' in "Spaniel" and the other is just to the left of the
'S.' They were clearly added AFTER the coin was minted
because they are nicely cut into the metal. I would describe
the 'dots' as circles with a smaller 'dot' inside of them.
Very small, I saw nothing of them until I examined the coin
with a 10x loupe. I will take your suggestion and examine
other "signatures" of Otakar Spaniel.
Thanks again for your help.

I can see a dot inside a circle before "S", it looks like "zero" or "O", can be part of the mint mark. But where is another dot? Picture might be posted later.

The other dot is part of the letter 'p' in "Spaniel."

That is good to see (hear). So are the dots a mint mark or a "signature" of Spaniel? Thanks
