A buddy brought this over here to show me and I took a couple shots of it and figured I would post them here to see what you all thought NGC graded this coin. I didn't say anything to him but I have a feeling they over graded this one a little. The Obverse of the slab had some deep scratches in it so I wet sanded it and polished it out a little so it may look a little fuzzy but that is because of the slab. I think he said he was going to use something else on it to polish it better but he didn't have allot of time for me to try other things

I would grade it AU-50, possibly a little more but not much.

On a side note, as a Jeweler I use "Crystal-Kleer" to refurbish plastic/mineral crystals on watches. It also works on clear plastics. If you don't have a buffing wheel you could use a dremel...run at moderate speed and with light pressure and short contacts between the polish and the plastic to prevent overheating.

I did use a buffing wheel on a dremel but didn't have much in the polishing compounds to polish it up real good while it was here. What I had did an alright job as after using the fine grit sand paper you couldn't even see the coin so it worked but just needed to be worked with a little longer. Theb slab had some pretty6 deep gashes in it so it definitely looks better than it did before I started but that crystal-kleer rouge may be something I need to get myself to polish some slabs out

All things considered, I'm at 55-58 net 55, lovely coin with excellent surfaces.

Yeah actually I will up my wear grade a bit; it doesn't look 'nice' for a 55 or better, but I don't think this has 50 wear.

AU-50 details, the obverse looks to have had a spot on the obverse right side where it was cleaned or rubbed to remove some environment issues. Reverse also had some dark areas that might be hiding surface corrosion below it.

I too believe it has some minor surface problems, net AU-50 seems fair. Its very sharply struck.

I really think NGC over graded this one a little and it seems like everyone on here is in agreement with me, When I first saw it AU was my first impression also but NGC gave it

1853-Large-Cent

I called my friend and told him my concerns about the grade and told him I had posted it here to make sure I was correct as old copper is not anything I am an expert on. I told him if there was any way for him to return it he may want to do so unless he got a good deal on the coin. he didn't say one way or another but I feel better now that I did let him know my opinion anyway

Bryan, check out my thread trashing NGC's grading. Its all over the place. If they can grade my MS-66 (possible RB) 2c piece as MS-63 BN and randomly call all my lincolns whizzed/cleaned or whatever, then this really isn't much of a surprise. Considering what coins of mine they put in problem holders and that they tend to be strict on slapping the 'corrosion' label on copper, I'm really surprised this did not get it.

I know everyone makes mistakes but I have seen ALLOT more of them from NGC then I have from others it seems. It is getting hard for me to tell my new collector friends that can't grade yet to consider graded coins from NGC when I keep seeing things that I just can't agree with in their holders. I am sure the price difference between an AU and MS isn't very much with this particular coin but it can mean thousands with some of them out there. That isn't even taking into account of the coin having any problems and being called problem free. I didn't see any problems on the coin when it was in hand so can't really say this should have been net graded but I didn't really look very closely at it except for looking at the grading and saw what looked like wear to me even though it was labeled as MS

^^ exactly, it's like they're on something or are just too busy spitting out modern coins in fancy slabs to do real grading. Its also been pretty sudden because I didn't see anything outrageous before.
