Well, many people on this forum are not avid collectors of 1804 proof eagles, but instead are working on completing and/or upgrading a 7070 set. I fall into this category as well. I live in NY and I bought the album from Stacks many years ago, but lost interest in numismatics for 7 years. Recently, having read the forums, I decided that it would be a cool endeavor. I am putting an emphasis on quality, buying the best coins that I can afford. The easier coins are BU, and proof. Some of the highlights include 2 original Seated dollars, in EF and VG, a proof Mercury dime, nice AU Half Cents, BU Standing Liberty, and two nice capped bust coins. I lost patience for the harder coins, such as the Classic Head Cent and Capped Bust quarter - which I bought as details F and EF respectively.

Now, I am left with the following holes in my album: Draped Bust Half Cent, Lincoln Head 1909 VDB (don't want to crack out an NGC MS65RED), 2 Liberty Seated half dimes, Shield nickel, Capped Bust/Librty Seated Arrows Dimes, 20 cent piece, 2 Liberty Seated quarters, Standing Liberty Type 1, Capped Bust Reeded Half Dollar, and 2 Liberty Seated half dollars. In addition, several of the easier coins are not up to par and should be upgraded if I want the set as a whole to have a strong resale value at some point. Most of the missing coins are from the Liberty Seated Type, which are easily available on ebay in low grades, but difficult to find nice problem-free examples on my budget. I also find the design to be boring. I am wondering where I can find inspiration to like these coins so I can go out and buy some.

One thing I do for my type set is to pick a couple of years that are significant for some reason... ie. Grandfathers birth year or even start of prohibition. Any event that means something to you or history. Then I look for the best, problem free coin from that year. Just a thought.

There are many designs that I do not find appealing in the 7070 set (one being the Morgan dollar), but there are also many really attractive coins and I like the Seated halves. If they don't blow your horn just get the ones you need for your set and you can move on to your more preferred designs. A complete 7070 set is really impressive but then you find yourself upgrading. Enjoy your search.

A few ebay purchases in my 7070.

Thanks for sharing some of your coins! I am missing a lot of the Seated coinage in general (other than the two dollars which I do have), and have almost everything else for a complete 7070. Here is the Seated half dollar with arrows that I have now acquired. I am still missing 2 Liberty Half Dollar, 2 Liberty Quarters, Liberty 20 cent piece, Liberty Standing quarter, 2 Liberty Half Dimes, and a Liberty Dime. I would like all of those coins to be around the same quality as this piece, but I don't have an endless trunk of money.

For me it's all about the history of the evolution of the coins as a whole, not the individual coins. I think I would get bored very quickly trying to collect all the dates and varieties of one particular type of coin, but I love being able to hold 200 years of history in my hands and being able to quickly page through and see how coins have changed during that period.

It is hard to get interested in a series that just doesn't toot your horn in the 7070 album. Mine was the half dollar commems. What I did was just pick out a couple of the designs I liked best out of the modern commems and filled the holes at the time. After collecting and filling more and more of the album my taste changed and I started to appreciate the classic commems so I started swapping out the modern ones for classics. With a type album there is bound to be at least one series that the person filling the holes just aren't interested in at all and with those holes I would just buy the ones I had to have in a grade that I thought would be sufficient for the album as a whole and forget about them. If somewhere down the road these coins start to spark your interest you can always do like I did with the commems and swap them out for others if you want but if you don't want to swap them you will have the enjoyment of knowing the ones already in there are good enough to not throw the look of the album off because you just threw any old coin in there when you were filling the holes. When I started my type album I knew very little about most of the coins in the album so I just set a minimum grade I wanted in the album and started filling the holes with coins in that range. The only requirements I had was I wanted the coins to be problem free and in at least AU-50 condition so they wouldn't look out of place beside a BU or even a stray proof coin
