Ok guys, I know the topic was around here a few months ago and I'm trying to find it but cant. I don't think it was the main topic but rather a branch of of another topic. But anyways, What are your thoughts about serial numbers on bar. Do you like them? Pay more for them? Don't care? Know of bars going for more because of them? Looking for your thoughts and feelings. I will start. I like serial numbers...to a degree. I do not pay super high premiums but I will pay a bit extra because I think its neat. Picking up a binary or radar or low serial number. Especially like them on engelhards. Also, I find that low serial numbers on old school bars attractive. Something about knowing you have one of the first of the bars from back in the day that I just like. Its like owning a low mintage coin but in bullion form. JMHO. Look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts. CHEERS! Edited by samsnate 10/27/2012 6:16 pm

Bought an overpiced 1kg silver coin a year ago. Was suppose to flip it but my wife noticed that the serial number matches our wedding anniversary perfectly. We now have the giant silver coin for keeps, for ever.

pbw - If you got out of not noticing the number/date thing yourself without monster punishment/suffering for a LONG period of time, you lucked out. Being stuck w/ the coin for life is a small price to pay on that one...
sam - I'm definitely pro-serial number. In the horrible eventuality of ever having to deal with an insurance company about a theft....the serial #, a picture of the numbered bar and a receipt with the number on it all strengthen your position in the battle with the claims department about a thousand times over.

I've never thought about that. Serial numbers would indeed come in handy in case of theft

I like the serial numbers. I don't know that I would pay a premium for a special or certain number, but perhaps a very small one. I would certainly take the serial number over non-serialized bar, all other things being equal.

Same here, Freddy. Recovery of property, as well as catching the miscreants is a top priority after a theft. Being able to prove to the satisfaction of a judge that an item in question is definitely your property will go a very long way towards recovering it after the trial is over. While I will not pay a lot for serial numbered bars, I neatly sidestep that issue by refusing to buy ANY bars that are not numbered.

I know 1oz Ag bars aren't something large scale hoarders can do in big numbers because of the inconvenient storage aspects, but for new and smaller-scale stackers... The current production J-M 1oz extruded bars (recently on sale @ APMEX & regularly $1.49 over spot @ Goldmart) are individually numbered. If I was buying 1oz bars, they're the ones I'd buy. Reputable name, about as cheap as cheap gets, 1oz size for smaller purchases & numbered, too. You're not paying much (if any) extra premium for the numbering on those bars.

I don't think I would ever pay a premium for a certain serial number on a bar. But then again, I also approach silver more as stacking than a collecting so I can certainly see why someone would.
