Greetings! Moments ago I just purchased a new addition to my 7070 set from ebay. It is the first Draped Bust Half Cent that I have ever owned, and also one of the top 3 priciest coins which I have purchased for the album. While I gather that it may not be TPG gradable, (although the listing did not mention any problems) I like that it has all of the details and that it is not a dark coin. Please help me to grade the coin and let me know what a fair price might have been. Edited by coins4fun 10/27/2012 4:49 pm

Early copper presents a host of grading problems but I'll take a shot. Looks like EF detail on this coin. I see minor damage consisting of the small cut on Liberty's neck, another larger one on her cheek, and a rim nick above R in LIBERTY. There appear to be some long shallow scratches on the reverse, although the one arcing from the first T in STATES across to AM in AMERICA looks more like a die crack; if so it may actually add to the appeal and value of the coin.
The biggest problem is the color which is too bright for a coin with this much wear. I presume it has been re-colored in an attempt to make it look like a higher-grade piece. IMO that is the defect most likely to garner a "details" or "genuine" grade at NGC or PCGS.
The 1803 is a better date and carries a premium in all grades. Retail guides price it at around $800 in EF. With the contact marks and especially the color issue I'd think this one should be priced well below that value, maybe in the $500-600 dollar ballpark. In any case this better-date piece should stand out (in a good way!) in your type set.

I have a feeling the bright lighting is taking away from how good this coin looks in hand.
I really like the detail this coin has. To me the line from "T" to "AM"is a die crack.

Very nice coin Quote: I like that it has all of the details and that it is not a dark coin. Just a comment about the color. We all have our preferences and so this is not a criticism - just my humble opinion. The coin should be chocolate brown and if it isn't maybe it was cleaned or colored as Jaobler has mentioned. . Maybe the photo has too much light and if so that would be a good thing.

Even with the cleaning it is a great coin, congrats on your purchase.

That is a killer die crack running all the way across the reverse there. It does appear to have been given a nasty wiping, but it doesn't HAVE to be brown IMO. It should grade just fine, not sure why you would say not. If you send it to the crooks, they will simply slab it genuine. ANACS will grade it and give it a details probably of cleaned. I might be more inclined to go VF given the wear on the reverse. Regardless, a nice coin.

I have listed that I paid 350.00 for the 1804 1/2 cent that was in ANACS AU-53 slab for my 7070 album. This was about 4 years ago and I am not sure how much the prices has changed since then

There are four varieties for 1803, two are common, one is scarce and one is rare. Unfortunately this is the C-1 which is one of the common ones. The crack between ST and the gravers scratch joining the fraction bar to the right ribbon confirm it.
