Acetone hey - just might, but will practice on a common coin first.
I love that florin and good score on the date - ignorance can be bliss sometimes, if a seller is lazy or can't be bothered digging deeper into what they have - then that is their loss and your gain!
I love the Gothic Florins and have 2, but they are not cheap outside of worn condition - and you are lucky the date survives - most I see and both of mine, the date wears off one or more letters.
I have 2 and not surprisingly, both are common dates from the 1875 - 1887 period. I also have a very worn 1849 Godless Florin which only cost me $20 (USD$12)

A new addition this week. I really like the big 'chunky' feel of the pre 1860 pennies. This one still retains some of the original mint lustre.   |

While I collect hammered coins, I do have one or two others and this is one of the very few British coins I actually bought. 1916 Halfcrown. It's not too bad in my opinion. The main problem areas (hair and ear to obverse and top of the shield, lion's noses on the reverse) show wear, but not too badly. No idea about the 'blue' highlights on the obverse. Must just be a trick of the light, but I'm too lazy to re-photograph it, sorry!  Edited by Tom Goodheart

As the blue on the Half crown is only to the high points on the OBV it could just be PVC from possibly being in a folder or flip with something on top of it.May come off if it is ,with a tiny bit of 3 in 1 oil(a tiny bit or you will clean all the coin ) on a cotton bud or if that does not work acetone although again only a tiny bit on a cotton bud.Better to give it a quick dip in distilled water after and pat dry.

Hogarth and Paddy B - love that copper Tom Goodheart - stunning half crown - almost certianly PVC - I had a 1931 coin with the same problem. Even though your coin is Sterling, it still has 7.5% copper and that reacts - so much silver means possibly why your verdigris is more blaudigris!! The silver reacts with copper. Meanwhile 30 of the 36 Halfcrowns I bought arrived today and all of these will be extracted from the PVC and wrecked 2 by 2's - a few hours open air, light cold water wash and into my mylars.  30 Halfcrowns, 21 from one seller (Flips) and 9 from another seller (PVC album page). Coins vary between 1909 and 1970, conditions VG to Proof - have something to do today! |
