Got it's notorious name because in those dimly lit taverns of jack the ripper era the barmaids mistook these for crowns and had to pay the difference back themselves. That I didn't know Zoo. Every day's a school day. My final acquisition for the year, a 1708 Queen Anne Shilling. Very lustrous. I overpaid for it a bit, but I liked it.   |

Daltonista - A real beauty that The Godalming Bank token is! Nobel Auctions is a solid firm and Jim Nobel is a first rate researcher, I'd tend to believe his history on the token, however proving there is always so much more research that is not completed in the field of numismatics.

I dunno, westcoin -- those Kempson Conders you've been posting keep getting prettier and prettier!
There's the advantage, I guess, that those were issued for collectors who "set them aside," while even Davis in 1904 and Withers (1999) warned that the early 19th-century tokens I collect actually circulated, so everyone should be delighted when they find an EF every now and then.
And in my experience -- particularly in the realm of Dalton silver tokens like the Godalming piece -- to encounter an RRR in any condition once a year means you're having a very busy year!

A few new acquisitions for me. The first two are marginal upgrades for my own collection. The third is interesting - clearly a 1711 Queen Anne shilling as the silver shows through, but gilded and engraved to pass off as a Queen Anne Guinea. Presumably fairly contemporary and a Capital offence at that time. I wonder if the perpetrator got away with it or ended up dancing on the end of a rope?    |

Just some more scanner/camera/IrfanView play when I should be doing forty other things!
I decided to assemble a desktop background image using nine of my Sussex shilling and sixpence tokens. These are all dated 1811 and represent all the issuers of Regency Period silver tokens from that county. As is, this montage will actually have to be shrunk a few percent to allow for about a 1/2" black border and then become the 1920x1080 desktop image. Of course, I'll be using the 8.5Mb image I originally stitched together rather than this compressed 299Kb version, so it should be noticeably more high-def.
I hope to post another county or two during the coming months, unless you guys want to vote me down on that... Click the image to fill your screen.

I visited my not so local coin dealer (104kms) and had a look through their GB coins, found a batch I liked that much that I paid too much for them. Oh well First was a 1723 KGI shilling rated as VG with a punch-mark on the reverse, which dimples through to the obverse. Still, it helps fill a large gap I have in shillings between James II and George IV  The Ox moves slowly, but the Earth is patient.
