While he has been thoroughly mythologised he was originally a Lebanese officer in the Roman army, and being Christian, refused to worship the emperor Diocletian, who being a really nasty piece of work was nicknamed "the dragon". When interrogated by him George tied him in knots and was executed. Two of the guards with him converted during the escapade and were also martyred. The fact that he'd intellectually wiped the floor with this tyrant gave rise to the story that he'd "killed the dragon". Report this Post to the Staff
