Thanks for the comments.

Dearborn, folks who obtain coins from Westminster Collections and keep them in the change checker cards report that after a while the coin starts to tone\discolour.

I personally remove them from these cards and put the coins in capsules.

King Edward VII busts loose on this interesting repousse halfpenny-size button.

Dearborn, search on Google or ebay, and maybe Etsy, for "repousse," which is the name of the technique used in making them. "Repousse coins" should limit the field considerably, because the process (an ancient one) was employed in jewelrymaking more than in medallic arts. This was likely, I believe, because it requires really messing up the reverse side of the main image, structurally as well as aesthetically.

Sorry to report I'm old enough to remember Kennedy halves being converted like this in the mid-1960's as part of his civic canonization. I'm sure many thousands were sold through advertising in the "back matter" of magazines, maybe even the weekly "Parade" that was included in Sunday newspapers everywhere.

Scratching my head here, Dearborn...not coming up with a regular-issue coin this could have been based on the reverse you found. Maybe a token or medallion, or perhaps just a pseudo-coin jewelry piece to begin with?

Whatever, and in keeping with Westcoin's reminders that we buy the book before the coin -- or non-coin -- I dug a bit too and actually found the book, which was described here on The E-Sylum in 2011.
