Does any one know anything about non silver War Nickels, I know they exist as they are mentioned in the red-book 07 but there is no value or way to confirm. I ask because I dug a 1943 that does not look silver and rung up on my det. like a nickel, not a silver nickel (I have found both b-4) and believe I may have one

To confirm your find, you should bring it to a reputable coin dealer. They should be able to give you more information about your nickel.

Welcome to our CC family!

We have a lot of metal detectorists here, so I hope you stick around. I think you'll enjoy it here.

I agree that you should take it to a reputable dealer or to a coin show if there is one in your area. A coin show would be better since you could get multiple opinions. Your other option would be to look into CONECA (the link is in my signature). For a fee, they will evaluate varieties and errors.

Hi, Texas Connection...I'll just add my best wishes, and, say, when you do get that opinion from a dealer or two, share it with us,too! And a couple of pics...

BTW...I've done some metal detecting in the past. Great fun to rescue something that has been buried and lost for years upon years.

Good luck

A non-silver War Nickel would be one of the common counterfeits produced in the thousands during the 1950s. Easiest way to tell them is that they do not have a mintmark - ALL real War Nickels have a huge mintmark above the Monticello. I believe the fakes were mostly 1944 though.

I've heard of many stories of sheets of metal left over from previous years that ended up being used. This apparently happened with the 43 Lincoln Cent in Copper, The 44 Lincoln being steel, etc. Possibly the same thing happened with the 42 sheets being used to produce some 43 Nickels. Most dealers would just say fake. Best send to a place like PCGS or NGC to have authenticated. Anyone that does not know for sure will usually make something up.

HI I don't reckon there's much point in posting a pic, but-I checked 3 nickels and all rang up different. They were all 1943-s nickels. One rang up as silver, one mid and one was definitely not but was as a common nickel. (or like a pull tab for you detectorist's) All looked silver when polished. I can't imagine why the signals were so different. Again all were same mint.
