Here's my first silver found MD! And a beautiful Barber dime to boot: Such a joy for me! So exciting. Wish I lived down the Jersey Shore, hurricane Sandy is hitting hard, and the searching on Tuesday or Wednesday should be incredible.

Nice find! Wish I can join you after Sandy. I'll have to settle for the parks of California :-)

Congrats. Please keep in mind when you dig a coin DO NOT rub the dirt off. Wrap the coin in a secure position and rinse it when you get home. If you carry a canteen or have water with you, flush the coin then wrap it so it doesn't move around. I can see all the numerous scuffs from rubbing the soil off your coin. I know because most of my dug silver looks this way. You get anxious on location to see what you found. If you dig a scarce date you will greatly devalue the coin by rubbing the dirt into the surface. It won't take much to expose the fresh silver on a tarnished coin.

Quote: I can see all the numerous scuffs from rubbing the soil off your coin. I know because most of my dug silver looks this way. Huh? In other words, don't do as I do, do as I say? I've dug many a silver that comes out of the ground scratched, from over 100 years of being pushed around by frost, machinery, etc, although I do agree with rinsing only and no rubbing of dirt off the coin while in the field.

It's not about do as I say not as I do. It's about learning from my mistakes. I no longer do this to my coins. I guess I should have been a little clearer. And nature has its way of adding scuffs.
A lot of the old timers used a probe to find their targets. I'd look at someones dug collection and every coin had a huge gouge or scratch from their probe. I never understood this method.

Thanks, everyone. Appreciate your encouraging comments.
As far as I can remember, I didn't really clean it. It came out of the ground in just about this condition. I couldn't believe what great shape it was in, and it wasn't even very deep! Only a few inches.
Right after that the pastor kicked me off the property the other priest said I could search. I'm gonna go meet him and tell him I'll clean the garbage as I go and donate 50% of what I find. I might be able to talk him into it. I hope so.

fistfullafdirt, you are very correct. I wasn't thinking about things moving underground but I guess it does happen. Grounds expand and contract with weather changes and rain fall plus tree and plant roots can push coins too. One of my hunt buddies and I had asked a man if we could hunt his property. He couldn't have been nicer . When we were walking out to the field, we noticed his truck had a flat tire. My buddy and I decided to tell him and then offer to change his tire as a gesture for him letting us detect his property. He became very agitated and yelled at us to leave his property . We could never figure out what came over him. We should have hunted first, then told him about the flat.

That stinks, man. I hate those irrational type of situations. makes no sense at all, you just have to swallow it and accept that you can't know. I hate that.

Can anyone tell me how to get the dirt of coins like and pennies and such? Right now I am leaving them in oil overnight, but it doesn't do much.
Other than electrolysis, is there anything to clean and restore some luster?
Thanks everyone
