another fun thing about the type set is you really have to look for the coins. not to many dealers have all of the coins you will need for a 7070 at one time. you have to drive around, wait, wait a little more, and wait. then all of a sudden you'll see a classic head large cent show up, then a deal on a Twenty Cent Piece. speaking of Twenty Cent Pieces have been relatively cheap on ebay lately if you dont feel like going to coin stores/shows.

As I was think about collection options, I stumbled onto this PCGS page which lists many different type sets, so if a 7070 is not quite what you are looking for, you have many more options to look at. You can click the description of each type set and get a description of the set. Click another link and you get a complete list of every coin in that set. Copy and paste into a spreadsheet and you have your own checklist. http://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/default.aspx?c=9Mike

Ya I really like that one. One thing about that one in particular is that it seems fairly easy to complete and probably not nearly as expensive. Another good bonus is that once I get those, I can always upgrade and go to the 7070 set.

yepper-- I had a folder for my type set--I like this better--on a budget this is a good fit--the 7070 can be tough

The 7070 set is a solid one, but it is pricey especially if you do the gold page. The only big downfall is its lack of modern coinage since they seem to refuse to update it and theres rumors the owner of Dansco just kind of runs it part time now so that update may not be coming anytime soon. The intercept shield albums have a real nice coin selection too, the big complaint there is the pages are pretty things so its a snug fit with some of the dollars and the ASE especially

I have found the 7070 taking me to places I was not anticipating when I started what was going to be a quick stop in numismatics. I love the walkers, but the 7070 is becoming a treasure of mine.
@sdcoin, I took a look at the different type sets PCGS link you sent out above, but I don't see a listing for a 7070. Would you know which collection the 7070 represents?

@Tjmcman - Sorry, I don't know which of those = 7070. I stumbled into the page looking for an alternative to the 7070. Lack of album availability and the priceyness of the gold in the 7070 sent me looking for something else.

Chiming in late here, I know, but I really think it depends on what gets your numismatic juices flowing. If you really love Walking Liberties and think they are the most beautiful coin ever produced by the U.S. Mint, then you would probably be happier working on a Walking Liberty set instead of wasting your time and money on a bunch of coins that don't interest you. If, on the other hand, you are more interested in the history of U.S. coins and appreciate the variety and development of the coins put out by the mint over the last 200 years (even if you Walking Liberties are your favorite), then you would definitely do well with a Type Set. I'm certainly in the latter group, but there are plenty of folks who get a lot of enjoyment focusing on just Lincoln Cents or Ikes or Mercury dimes, etc.

Well, as much as I do like the walking liberties..I have begun to have more of an appreciation for all of coins, as I am a big history buff! So I think that my choice is to start a 7070 set. I can always have something to work on, and like many of you have mentioned, it may take me a while to complete. To me that is a great set, and will give me a broad view of all coins that can be collected.
I thank all of you in helping me make this choice!!
Now from here, what album or plaque should I purchase to keep the coins safe, and display them properly? I am open to all help and suggestions.

Also, when building a 7070 set, what coins do you guys aim to put in each slot? (Since the slots are typically a broad range of dates?)

Most would fill their 7070 with the best quality coins they could get. Others will focus on the first year of the issue and still others will focus on the rarest coins they can get for the opening. Some have graded sets and still others will have expanded sets on coin differences missing from the dansco album. I won't even go into the commemorative holes there are lots of reasons for people's options there.
