Can anyone tell me why the obverse for this coin is different from all the others in the series? The rock has a different shape and the reeding is missing.

Welcome to CC!

I'm not sure. Can you also post a pic of the reverse?

No Drapery mean there is no Drapery at Liberty's laft elbow. Look at later dates and you'll see what I am talking about.

The obverse is different from the 1838-9 no drapery. I was just wondering if there was a story behind the 1840-O no drapery.

Really don't know the no Drapery story, but you peaked my interest and I will look it up.

You know, this has me going. There are definite differences between the 1839 and 1840 No Drapery dies - I found differences in the gown as well. I did see it mentioned that the denticles of the 1940 were much smaller, at times almost completely missing, like the OP's coin.

Johnnquinn the denticles on the first 1840-O dies were only 0.2mm long and wore off from die polishing. Whatever differences you see in shapes may be because of the grade. Wear distorts devices--spreading and merging.
