I've noticed on a number of Capped Bust half dollars that there seems to be what appears to be wear on the reverse that slides down from the rim to almost the center at the eleven oclock part of the coin almost always obscuring the first few letters of Pluribus.

I've seen it enough to think it odd for coincidence type wear and tear and was wondering if this is a sign of a common weak strike of the coin?

Thanks,
Terry McManus

This is most certainly due to strike. You will find this a lot in the early 1830's in the series.

Very common. Wish I had access to the John Reich Society Journal, Edgar Souder wrote a great article about this.

The motto is directly opposite the point of highest relief- the base of the bust.

Yep it took a lot of metal to fill in Liberty's bust and there just wasn't enough left over for the ribbon on the other side.
