The 25 Days Of Barber Coins!!

It was an "oops" when I bid on it when I was trying to bid on another coin during a timed Proxibid auction. I had to have yet another one of those, "Ummm, honey..." conversations.

It looks like a fine buy to me!!


(It also amazes me when I see an old thread resurrected! AND see its had over 26,000 views!! YES!!)

Ok... seems I have forgotten to post new images as promised...

The first two are out of the Heritage Long Beach auction a month ago.

1895-S Quarter PCGS 55 - Tough coin - harder to locate than I remembered before on my first set:



1913-P Quarter PCGS 62 - Had a hard time finding a decent AU 55-58:





and since Long Beach, I have picked up this 1892-O Quarter Ty. 2 - in an AU 58 holder.This is an ebay purchase.






This 1899-S Quarter is graded AU 53 - and IMHO - undergraded - I feel it should be an AU 55+. This coin is out of Stack's Bowers Baltimore sale last week.

Just got back from Summer FUN, and spent two days there basically looking for upgrades and maybe a missing Quarter date.

I ended up buying my old 1898 Half in PCGS 65, good having her home again.

I also upgraded my 1898-O Dime from a PCGS 50 to a 58 which
is no trifling matter. Found a duplicate 1913-D Quarter in PCGS 58.

I found some coins that were dipped to death ... Others toned to the MAX and a nice assortment of coins inbetween !

The highlight of the weekend was finding two other dates I still need but just can not afford; I'd have to mortgage my home to buy them and I am certainly not going to do that ! I found a 1901-S & a 1913-S Quarters both in NGC 67. One was a Star and the other was a plus. Both had screaming luster ... $200K for the 01-S and $65K for the 13-S.

I was able to spend a little time with Ben Todd of Sarasota Rare Coins, Jason Flowers (company of same name) and Sergio Sanchez, amoungst others . It was the best show for Barbers I had seen in years. I was a little disappointed that a couple of my favorite mid range Barber dealers were absent. Guess they thought Summer FUN was going to be a bust. As far from the truth as you could imagine.

A good friend who also collects all series of a Barbers accompanied me and we found a few nice VF/ XF Quarters for his son's collection. We located really nice toned coins for $100 and less. My friend has a much nicer set of Barbers than I do ... He is # 1 on NGC in Dimes and # 2 in Quarters and Halves. Needless to say, he is super proud of his sets and has decided to branch out into other series. I need to catalog his Barbers soon as there is so much, it's gotten away from him. Many of these coins need to be reviewed by CAC, and then sent to a professional photographer.

I only have one image to show... My old 1898 Half... When I am off the iPad, I'll get it up on this thread. I do not have other images as I take horrible pictures with my iPhone.

Currently, my sets are far from the grade level I used to own.
My Nickel, Dime and Half sets are complete in PCGS holders. My Quarter
Collection is approximately at 90% completion.

For the most part my sets range from a couple of Halves in 35 to a high of MS 64+. The Dimes low spot is 40-45 to a high of MS 65. And the Quarters are from a low of 45 to MS 64+.

I have picked up a few duplicates along the way and I have another Dime set at 90% complete. A few Quarters also duplicated... Have a mix of 64's and 58's of the same date. At this point in my collecting career, I am just picking up eye appealing coins. Some might be AT at one service - and some might be CAC'd ... Some nice coins have not been CAC 'd and a number of my Barber buddies still can't figure out why. It's sometimes easier to pick up a pre CAC 'd coin, rather than submit. I still do both and I have a very attractive collection, if I do say so myself.

Mind you, this is far from an upper echelon set ... It's mid range all the way.
The Dale Friend, Sunnywood, Duckor, YeOldOne ( Gene Gardner), Chugum Collections ( DJ Rowbotham ) and The Plymouth Collection are far above my sets. I know I am skipping many fine sets. A close friend ( Dr. Pete Shireman) has a superlative set of a halves. He is listed at PCGS as having the #1 set of Halves.

I met the owner of the Laxdive collections... All Barbers... MS and Proof.
He has exquisite tastes and has all the Proofs but two,or three.

Another great collection, belonging to a good friend is the SROTAG Collection. It's on the NGC Forums/ Registry.

A close friend! Labelman87 has a really choice Quarter set in the works.
He picked up,a few at auction back in 2011 when my sets were auctioned off by Heritage ( The Elbesaar Collections ).

Had a friend stay at my home and image my Barber Nickel collection.
He will be sending a CD and I'll be adding images from him soon.

Ok... all things change - loose interest in a series - it happens all the time.

One series you rarely hear me talk about - but one of my favorites is the Nickel Barber set. My grandfather used to save them in AU - and I finished his collection back in the early 1990's.

A friend was visiting me this past weekend and he wanted to do some imaging for me... so ... here are a couple of my nickels.

He is going to burn a CD and once received, I'll post more. In the mean time, here are three images he did send me.
